This year’s Angus Advent Calendar is a series of jolly early C20th books from the Carey Kingsgate Press. Named for missionary William Carey, the press published a great many ‘improving’ novels for young people that would have made perfect Christmas gifts. (Palm-Nut Valley by Kathleen Bell, 1919)

Day 3’s #ArchiveAdventCalendar is an ‘Eastern sheep drawing his fatt tayle in a cart’ from 1705. The fat tailed #sheep is a real breed and appears twice in the Bible (Exo. 29:22 + Lev 3:9) so may well have been the kind watched by the Bethlehem shepherds! Though they probably didn’t have tail carts.
A black and white print from 1705 of a sheep with curled horns and a long fat tail, that it is pulling behind it in a small two wheeled cart. Text on the image reads 'An Eastern Sheet drawing his fatt tayle in a Cart weighing 40 pound weight or more'.

Welcome to our #ArchiveAdventCalendar ! In the 1820s Jens and Karina Holm, their child and reindeer were very far from their home in Lapland. Working as a living exhibit in London they displayed their traditional Sami dress and ways of life in front of a painted panorama of the North Cape, Norway.
A print from 1820 of a Laplander family, a small child and two parents, in traditional dress. There is a tent made from furs in the background. The father sits in a wooden sled pulled by a reindeer in a decorated harness. A second reindeer stands behind. Behind the scene is a backdrop of snowy mountains with a few fir trees. The front page of pamphlet from 1820 titled 'An account of the family of Laplanders : which, with their summer and winter residences, domestic implements, sledges, herd of living reindeer; and a panoramic view of the North Cape, (from a drawing lately made on the spot by Capt. Brooke, to whom the proprietor is indebted for permission to exhibit it,) are now exhibiting at the Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly.'
