Research shows that girls as young as 6 (six!) express dissatisfaction with their bodies and an interest to be thinner. 6 years old. Boys are not. So when people say fatphobia affects men too, I say not in the same way.

I was very young when The Swan aired. Maybe 13/14 years old? It was incredibly impressionable. These already thin women, who I didn’t see as ugly or fat at all, hated themselves and wanted to do ANYTHING to feel beautiful. That exposure was one of many that led me to my DE and hatred to my body.

I watched The Swan doc on Hulu and breaking news, if women can be taught to not objectify themselves and learn to love their minds instead they’ll be happier. 2003 was a crazy time of heroine chic. Now we’ve duplicated that era in 2026 but with ozempic chic. And so the trauma cycle continues.
