I've done it too and I can't even claim I was 14 and an idiot. I mean, I still am an idiot, and I don't remember 14...

I mean, people have been utter dicks to open source developers for years now, just that the advent of AI/LLM sort of gave them a focus for it so it's gone way off the deep end lately with the hate...

figured I might as well go ahead and just... make that work before it goes open source. I know, I know, not exactly developing in the open but I like to have at least something that has useable functionality.

So yeah, that thing I was working on cleaning up so I can open source it (read: remove all my cruft files and those few files with old secrets and all my random rambly notes) might take a bit longer. It's kind of pivoted into something bigger because, well, it was heading in that direction and I

goroutines. And... well okay memory isn't cheap anymore but if you curate your dependencies a little bit (no Moose, for one) you can have some skinny apps.

ObClarification: also, not because of agentic coding - Go is nice and all, but the only *real* thing it's got going for itself is go routines, every other bit of it somehow grates on my nerves a little. Perl, on the other hand, is soothing (yes I'm a sick fuck). And I can work around it not having

It's kind of funny but I went `Perl -> Go -> Perl` because, well... reasons.

of "you mean, Bluesky the site, or Bluesky the PBLLC?" - this already fails the grandma test, we don't need grandma to get even more confused.

AngryDutchman @angrydutchman.online · 10h
Don't call it spaces, for one. That's already going to be a protocol feature, and I can already see the absolute hilarious confusion this is going to cause. Because if that goes through, then forever after the word "spaces" will be associated with Bluesky - and then we get to play that same fun game

IIRC deleted accounts stick around a bit on the PDS before they're actually fully zapped so I think with the proper juju magic you could revive one if it's still in that sticking around period. Don't recall exactly so, grain of salt :)

You'd almost think after their "AI bad" sort of statement that it's on purpose 🤣 How about @wisp.place for all of this?

I can't really be sad about it, something about their layout gives me 2000's internet vibes and I hate it 🤣 Skytrace is moderately better in that regard but still it's like, too damn slick! (sorry aly...)

I don't recall exactly, I know people asked the dude who runs it what he was using because they were like "lemme help fix that problem" and he wasn't super forthcoming about any of it. But I may be mistaken :/

Maybe $2 more of VPS will do that for you since you don't even need to store the blocks, just keep a running 24h tally and that takes fuck all in database storage. Maybe a bit more (like, <1G) if you keep history so you can do a weekly leaderboard.

IIRC they were using Postgres on the backend, which isn't a terrible idea right up until the point you start indexing dids because then your indices will pretty much equal or surpass your stored data. Could be wrong on that but yeah no I don't think they were "doing it right(tm)".

Yeeaaaah I mean... when they mentioned that I kind of had a "you what now?" moment because I mean, yeah okay, I can see spending like a couple hundred on it but what they were spending was beyond astronomical. I can see how they got there, though...

AngryDutchman @angrydutchman.online · 07/10/2026
Mmm... it's been pretty latent, like, I get it sometimes when listening to people but never when reading. But it does mean something's not quite right (heh, I mean... more so than normal :P) so, hey ho hey ho, off I go to see if they can figure out what it is this time 🤣

Jesus fuck... okay that's cheap as balls. Don't know if it'd deal well with the load of Perl I need to run along with Postgres and Redis though :D

I found in a cupboard. As far as viable prod service goes, there's a point where you have to spend some money - but if you start off from scratch to offer a paid service and you run up >300 bucks a month then you're doing it wrong :D

AngryDutchman @angrydutchman.online · 06/10/2026
Yeah, but that "oops I just spent my life savings on an AWS bill" moment is like a Darwin award for devs. I mean, I've never decided "oh let me build a feed gen and stand up like an entire Nomad cluster with all the trimmings just to run a single docker container". I'll run that off the potato

That's not a lot, that's a hella big fuckton of lot. We have some big-assed projects at work and our biggest tops in at 500k lines across the entire project but the largest file in that repo is 7000 lines. And that's already been the butt of many bloat jokes... so 50k? Yowch.

... can I please look through your space?". Sorry for the wall of text by the way, but this topic hits my buttons in all the right places.

AngryDutchman @angrydutchman.online · 06/10/2026
for that, and the admin can use it to examine your repo content, spaces included. Because that is the power they have been given by you putting your stuff on there, bluntly put. Because it's not like I can go "oh hey there Mr. Man who I suspect of having some kiddy diddling content hidden in here...

that has (right?) audit logging and all that jazz it's going to get you a stern talking to at best, fired at worst, so whether someone wants to make that trade-off is up to them. For an app dev who runs a happyview or w/e - well, IMO it's still better to just be up front and say yes, there's an UI

tea and browsing someone's spaces. That's an unfortunate fact; over the past 30 years I've managed to *not* do this (because I dunno, my moral compass or some shit) but I've seen plenty admins or people with that level of access go dig around because they could. Granted, in a corporate setting
100
AngryDutchman @angrydutchman.online · 06/10/2026
It'll happen regardless - depending on the admin. If they want, hacking up a query to dump what they want to look at to JSON and having a pretty viewer won't be much of a roadblock. Especially not these days given LLM that you can just ask to build you that and 5 minutes later you're sipping your

a little as well - which is unfortunately something I think Bluesky isn't good at. And whether "we" (developers who tinker with ATproto) can do it? Lord knows.

AngryDutchman @angrydutchman.online · 06/10/2026
tends to not work very well I think. So yes, we do need privacy, and inappropriate snooping is bad, *but* as an admin? I need to be able to snoop if the content lives on my infra. Because I don't have high powered lawyers on retainer, etc. etc. - so I think it's a case of adjusting user expectations

AngryDutchman @angrydutchman.online · 06/10/2026
abuse that privilege. I mean, some do, that's a fact, 99.9999% don't because, well, I dunno, moral compass, pride in their job, whatever reason. But personally I'd hate to end up in a position where my pretty ass is in court for something I had no agency over - like, the "well I didn't know" defense
100
AngryDutchman @angrydutchman.online · 06/10/2026
Also true, but I don't see how an appview/pds admin being able to see into the spaces they host is a problem; we do this on a daily basis with, well, just about everything that goes on the internet. Or at work. Somewhere, there's a sysadmin who can see *everything* - and you have to trust they don't
100
AngryDutchman @angrydutchman.online · 06/10/2026
True, and probably won't be because the only party that can afford it (Bluesky) may not be all too interested in doing it :D I mean, a proper code audit isn't the cheapest thing on the planet :(

Yeah no I believe you but I could just swear you said something about that and you didn't which, well, slightly worrisome in the sense that I may in fact actually for real be hallucinating shit or something or getting 2 conversations mixed up in epic fashion. Which uh, yeah not great because
