Issue #3 - Is Being A Union Member Really Worth It?

Before you go saying anything, yes, I am fully aware that unions exist for the purpose of workers' rights, including better pay wages and a safe and stable work environment. In fact, there have been union strikes that've happened in the entertainment industry within the past few years, mainly the WGA, SAG-AFTRA, and TAG, but like with many other things, there are pros and cons of becoming a union member, so if you're looking to become a union member yourself, there are certain specifics that you may want to consider before doing so.

First off, let's get the pros out of the way first. Becoming a union member has its benefits. For example, there's workplace protection. If you're interested in a specific job and you want to maintain it, your union can help out with that. There's also necessities like healthcare and compensation for overtime shifts, which can be considered very helpful, especially in today's economy. The cost of everything has gotten very expensive in recent years, including groceries, utilities, and even housing, and unless something is done about it, things may only get worse. Unions can actually help out in terms of compensation as negotiating with companies usually works out, resulting in higher and better pay wages for workers so that they can afford housing, utilities, and groceries.

However, not everything is all sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows everywhere, which brings me to the cons of becoming a union member. Typically, you would be required to pay union dues if you decide to become a member, which can either be monthly or yearly, and can be very costly. You'd also lose your individual freedom as a worker and must comply with union rules, restrictions, and even the decisions they make, even if you disagree with them. There's also the risk of employer pushback and retaliation, and even the call for strikes if negotiations fail.

And yes, you will have to consent to being out of work due to a strike, even if you don't want to. There are also certain political parties that unions may support, but you may not agree with depending on your political viewpoints and opinions. Entertainment industry unions like SAG-AFTRA are much stricter, prohibiting members from participating in non-union productions and gigs. So basically, you're stuck with being mandated to partake in union projects only. All this can especially be a problem for people who are on fixed income and those who have medical and/or mental disabilities like autism. Another thing is that unions also often focus on seniority, which is determined by how long a person has worked at a company, and honestly, I think it might be considered either discrimination or favoritism depending on who you ask.

Even if you decide to quit the union, you may still have to pay dues, which in all honesty sucks because although you'd still be receiving union benefits, you might still be screwed having to pay union dues. I know. Very stressful, right? Again, these are all just factors to consider when wanting to join a union, and I'm not gonna stop you if you want to be a member. Some people choose to become a union member while others don't want to, and that's okay.

People may have different views and opinions about union membership. Some good, some bad, some opinions may be indifferent or neutral. What's really important is that whether or not you decide to join a union, that's your choice. So in the end, the big question remains. Is being a union member really worth it? Well generally, it depends on one's viewpoint. Some people may have a good experience, while others might not have as much of a good experience due to specific factors like being restricted to what you can and can't do when you're a union member. Some of the rules might not be agreeable, but the benefits can be very helpful in most cases. If you're looking to find a long-term job and you want union benefits like healthcare and overtime compensation, I'd say go for it. But if you're someone who's on fixed income and/or have a medical/mental disability and can't afford to pay union dues or don't feel comfortable with working under union restrictions and policies (because yes, it can be very stressful), then I wouldn't really bother with joining a union.

But again, it's entirely up to you whether you want to become a union member or not. No one else should have to make that choice for you. You have the freedom to decide your future, not other people. If you want to join a union, that's fine. If you don't, that's fine too. Just try and be careful when looking for work opportunities because there are bad people and hostile work environments in this world.

I actually went onto the Skydance corporate website, and I saw that the section for Boomerang actually mentions Hanna-Barbera. This could mean that Skydance might actually see some value in the Hanna-Barbera brand and its massive library of characters! I have high hopes for this!🤩🤞🏼 #SaveHannaBarbera

Whenever I decide to start making kids' and family shows and movies for studios like Warner Bros., I will be sure to keep this in mind. I'm starting small right now with my #HannaBarbera70 project. @termiteterraceclub.bsky.social #SaveHannaBarbera
To successfully pitch and make more kids' and family content for major or independent studios, you need
to focus on playfulness, parental trust, and filling the current market gap where big streamers have
underbuilt family slates.

Key Strategies for Studio Pitches

• Focus on Playfulness and Relatability: Centers your core concept on play, much like the universal
appeal of Bluey, which resonates with both children and parents through authentic family dynamics.

• Design for Co-Viewing: Build shows and digital formats that appeal to parents just as much as
children, keeping family mitigation and curation habits in mind.

• Target the Content Gap: Emphasize that while children's media ranks high in actual viewing time,
major subscription services have scaled back commissions, leaving a massive opening for fresh, loyal
household builders.

• Ensure Strict Safety and Compliance: Bake age-appropriate standards, COPPA guidelines, and
clean language flags directly into your production framework from day one.

• Pitch the Right Partners: Target platforms like Netflix, Amazon, and specialized independent
networks that are actively experimenting with brand voices and taking creative risks on family IPs.

And finally, this is the list of places of interest. I know it's short, but keep in mind that everything is still a work in progress. JellyLand is obviously a play on Disneyland, and it's also quite similar in a way. *ahem* the renowned World of Life attraction.
Places of interest:

Jellystone City Hall - Meetings are held there, often regarding city ordinances and events.

Jellystone Elementary School - Young children go there to learn. Augie Doggie, Yakky Doodle, Boo-Boo Bear, Shag Rugg, Ding-A-Ling Wolf, Ogee and Junior Creepley attend the school.

Jellystone Supermarket - People shop and buy essentials from this place. Doggie Daddy, Mr. Jinks and Brenda Chance are the store's employees.JellyLand Family Resort - A widely popular vacation spot for families. One of their most popular attractions is The World of Life, which gives visitors the experience of life in prehistoric times (The Flintstones), the ancient Roman period (The Roman Holidays), the present day (Wait Till Your Father Gets Home) and what life could look like in the future (The Jetsons).

Issue #2 - Should Film Studios Really Be Taking Risks?

There was a time in Hollywood when it first began when movies were being put out every so often. But before theaters, there was the nickelodeon (not to be confused with the children's network of the same name). They were used back in the day for watching short movies, and you had to pay with coins to be able to see them. Then came the introduction of theaters, which were pretty much new at the time.

Movie studios like Warner Bros., Paramount, and Universal were founded by immigrants who came from different countries in the world. These studios made hit films that appealed to audiences nationwide. They took risks, and it paid off. Then there was the introduction of the Hayes Code, which limited what studios could put in their films. It was basically a form of censorship that prohibited things like dating someone of the opposite race, mocking Christianity, and even depictions of the Devil. All that stuff was considered taboo back in the day, and studios had to comply with these strict standards. That all changed when these restrictions were lifted several years later when the film rating system was introduced.

It helped, and still does, determine which film was suitable for a specific audience group. For example, "G" meant that the film was suitable for all audiences. Currently, there are 5 rating classifications. These are "G", "PG", "PG-13", "R", and "NC-17". With that, studios began to take risks once again without the pressurized restrictions that the Hayes Code had. Flashforward to today however, things are a bit more complicated now compared to several years ago.

There are mergers, layoffs, and worst of all, tax write-offs. Major film studios are now owned by corporations that determine what gets released to the public and what doesn't. Yeah, it's really unfair not only to consumers, but also to creators and the cast and crew who've worked on those projects. It really just seems like that these corporate CEOs only want to please investors and no one else.

However, some circumstances are not finance-related. There are some studios, including independent studios, that only allow certain specifics in their projects, which may limit creative freedom, although some creators prefer to play things safe. Some studios are Christian-based while some others are purely family-friendly. Even some creators are the same way in regards to making something that they believe would be entertaining for all audiences. Most studios are diversive and inclusion-friendly and would want to make programming dedicated to diverse cultures while simultaneously exploring them and learning all about them.

It's the exact definition of making everyone happy when people are dedicated to appealing to every audience and not just fans and anti-woke people who want things to just stay the same as they were several years ago. Speaking of which, I am grudgingly reminded of a video post from Adam Conover on Twitter (now X) from a few years ago saying that "They don't want to make you happy, they want to make everyone happy."

So what does "you" mean exactly? Are you implying that only fans deserve to be happy while everyone else should be kicked when they're down just because they want something dedicated to them? Personally, I don't agree with what he's saying here, and in my opinion, it doesn't roll off the tongue very well. And if what he's implying is the case, then I want absolutely no part of it.

For me, it's just one of those "what if" scenarios where you're afraid of potentially offending someone or making someone really upset, and I don't like that kind of idea. I believe that everyone deserves to be happy and to have something that they enjoy, not just one specific group of people. So, to answer the question: Should film studios really be taking risks? Well, financially, yes, but creatively, it really depends on the type of studio or the kind of creator because let's be real here; if it was made mandatory for every studio to take creative risks, then there's gonna be a lot of negative backlash from people. Not to mention that it would also take away creative freedom, and in turn, violate the first amendment.

But yeah, studios taking creative risks, that's always been a thing, and it has been since day 1. There were projects that got released that a lot of people didn't like. Heck, The Banana Splits Movie was released as a direct-to-video film, but fans of the original show didn't like it. Same with the 2021 Tom and Jerry movie, except it was a theatrical release. That's taking creative risks right there. You never know what to expect when you create something for people and it gets released to the public.

Some people might like it, some people might not like it, but hey, what matters is that you, the creator, made something and you had some fun doing it (or not, and that's okay). It's okay for people to like or not like something, and I do respect different opinions, but bullying and harassing others over their opinions is not okay. Trust me, I've heard stories of people taking their frustration out on the people who were involved in the movie Fixed, and that's even worse.

Issue #1 - Is #RIPCartoonNetwork Really Necessary?

Okay, I know what y'all are thinking: "Cartoon Network is dead! History is being destroyed forever! [REDACTED] David Zaslav!" Sorry, creators, animators, and writers, but that's not entirely true. The old Cartoon Network Studios building was sold off, and yes, I do understand the frustration behind this decision, but the studio itself was moved into a new building along with Warner Bros. Animation (and honestly, I wanna check that place out).

I honestly don't think that the whole thing is a huge deal, at least from my point of view, but it was a really big deal for a lot of people, even Animation Workers Ignited on Twitter (now X) had perpetuated a false rumor by using a hashtag known as #RIPCartoonNetwork, potentially getting people to believe that Cartoon Network as a whole was seemingly dead.Okay, let's take a look back at some history here. Cartoon Network (the channel) was launched on October 1st, 1992 by Turner Entertainment, Co., which had already purchased Hanna-Barbera and briefly MGM/UA a few years prior. Cartoon Network originally consisted of classic cartoons airing 24/7, including Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Yogi Bear, and yes, even Looney Tunes. About 2 years later, however, Cartoon Network Studios was founded, making cult classics such as Dexter's Laboratory, Cow and Chicken, and Johnny Bravo. All of which aired on Cartoon Network.

Flashforward to today, Cartoon Network's fate as a channel is fairly uncertain at this point in time. The Adult Swim block kept getting extended, but consequently, Cartoon Network has less hours a day now, and Michael Ouweleen might be part of the blame. Sure, he's helped bring Boomerang back to its former glory, but as for CN... I'm just hoping that the worst doesn't happen.

"There's just less and less kids' stuff happening on Cartoon Network these days." Yeah, when you're slashing hours from the iconic children's network in favor of Adult Swim. It seems to me that he doesn't really care about children at all and that he's only just trying to appeal to fans and adults, which I think is unfair. And to make things worse, Ouweleen is also in charge of the Cartoon Network documentary, which could essentially be pointless at the rate things are going. But enough of that talk. Despite everything that its going through, Cartoon Network is still holding up. The studio itself is still active and making new projects to this day, despite what *ahem*, "some" people are saying. Although the channel itself isn't doing as good, but fate can be changed for the better. We can, and should, work to save Cartoon Network from total collapse.

Write in fan letters saying how much Cartoon Network means to you. Let your voices be heard on social media. Share your fondest memories with your children (if you have any). Let those executives in charge know that CN should stay.

So overall, I personally don't think that the #RIPCartoonNetwork hashtag is at all necessary, unless you're someone who believes in reputation-hurting conspiracy theories and doesn't do anything to help a fallen company get back on its feet and instead just complaining about said company on social media just to get attention.

But yeah. I'm not trying to force people into doing anything regarding Cartoon Network, but if you want to, you're more than welcome to. I don't push people around trying to force them to believe anything that I do, nor do I disrespect different views and opinions. People are different in their own way, and that's okay. I'm just trying to learn how to handle controversy and everything better.Anyway, Cartoon Network is a memorable experience for a lot of people. I've even watched it like most kids. I grew up with some of the flash games on their website back when it was still active. It's safe to say that without it nor Boomerang, I never would've been a Hanna-Barbera fan. Cartoon Network is a children's network that should be preserved for future generations. Even making the slightest improvements would help make it better.

I hope that you would take my suggestions into consideration. And if you're a fan of Cartoon Network, I hope that you find this issue to be inspiring.

I used an image from The Banana Splits in Hocus Pocus Park that was on Hanna-Barbera Wiki (Not the Fandom wiki), and I traced it over using the shape tools in Microsoft Paint (No AI was used).

After that, I started coloring in the Splits in order of the opening song's roll call (🎶Flippin' like a pancake, popping like a cork: Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snork(y)🎶) and did some shading.

This is also my first time adding an anti-AI notice in any of my art pieces. But yeah, I'm pretty impressed with how this piece turned out. I honestly think it looks like official artwork by Hanna-Barbera from the 80's or 90's the way I made it.

I am throwing myself a Hanna-Barbera themed birthday party this year, and I am sharing these pictures to showcase what I've done to prepare in advance. My birthday is August 28th, so this is going to be a huge event for me this year, and I'm very excited for when that day comes. (🧵, 4/5)

Now, today, I would like to share a sneak preview of what's to come for a special next year event called #HannaBarbera70. This is the fan-made custom logo that I have made for the event. (Read alt for more details.) @awinger24.bsky.social @termiteterraceclub.bsky.social (🧵, 2/5)
Full Context:

I made this logo entirely from Microsoft Paint (Absolutely NO AI was used whatsoever). I traced over the Hanna-Barbera "Swirling Star" logo, which I copied from CLG Wiki (now AVID, Audiovisual Identity Database) using various colors to make it look a bit more colorful like a rainbow.

I also used the actual Hanna-Barbera logo that WB uses for media and merchandising and placed it above the traced-over Swirling Star logo (I am not officially endorsed by nor affiliated with Warner Bros. btw).

The big 7 and the text "Years of funtastic entertainment" I made completely on my own, and I put everything together to make the logo say "Hanna-Barbera: 70 Years of funtastic entertainment". In case you were wondering, I used the Swirling Star logo for the 0 in 70, which I thought was clever.

I've actually given it some thought, and I'm *not* going on a long hiatus. Reason? I made some adjustments to my list of muted words/phrases and tags, and now I'm feeling more confident about things. Sorry not sorry, hardcore/toxic anti-Ellisons people and boycotters.😌 #MyLifeMyChoice
Full context:

I have all of these tags (and even the word "boycott") on mute until this whole PSKY/WBD merger mess is done and over with, whether they merge or not. The only tag I don't have on the list is #BlockTheMerger mainly because I even want this merger to be blocked, but I won't be boycotting PSKY over the whole thing.

Regardless of whether they merge with WBD or not, I still would like to work for Warner Bros. and turn things around for the better. I want to tell stories that I think would be fun for everyone, even if it means starting from the bottom and working my way up to being able to work with pre-existing properties (preferably those of Hanna-Barbera).

But yeah, I can rest easy now that I've edited my list of muted words and tags. That way, I won't have to deal with that "You need to boycott CBS/Paramount/Skydance because the Ellisons are evil!" bull anymore. Again, sorry not sorry.

Remember when I blocked the Animation Workers Ignited Bluesky page? Well, I have recently found out that Jellybox has a Bluesky account, and I've blocked them as well for the same reasons as AWI. I don't associate myself with entertainment workers who spread misinformation about the industry.(Cont.)

I saw this picture while looking online (it was from someone's Facebook post, and I unfortunately don't know who), and I thought it would be a good idea to post it here. Please excuse some misspellings in it. #StopBullying #NoBullying #AntiBullying

I did a bit of looking into just recently, and I do not regret my decision to not unionize if and when I eventually decide to start my career at Warner Bros. #AutismMatters #SaveHannaBarbera #SaveWarnerBros

Hey, everyone. Unfortunately, my Instagram account got suspended today, and it was for something I never even did. I was never notified about it either, so consequently, I no longer have an Instagram account, and I will not be making another one anytime soon. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Studios became more hesitant to invest in animation, and the number of union members have greatly decreased from having 2,079 members to only 866 members following the 1982 strike, thus being the real reason why studios relied heavily on outsourcing by 2003. (6/9)
Several major animation projects were affected by the strike, including Richard Williams's Ziggy's Gift and Don Bluth's adaptation of East of the Sun and West of the Moon. While Ziggy's Gift was completed after the union allowed animators to return to work at smaller studios in September, Bluth's adaptation would never come to fruition.

The strike ultimately hurt many of the studios that were involved, and the industry as a whole experienced a slight decline as major production companies became more hesitant to invest in animation. Don Bluth Studios declared bankruptcy in 1985 and later relocated entirely to the Republic of Ireland.According to historian David Perlmutter, the strikes, "which publicly aired grievances that had built up gradually over the previous decade, did incalculable harm to the morale at the Hanna-Barbera studio".

The strike also led to a significant decline in the number of animators represented by unions. MPSC Local 839 declined from a record 2,079 members in 1979 to only 866 active members following the strike.

In 1985 contract negotiations, the union was removed from IATSE's basic labor contract and made concessions to studios regarding seniority benefits. Additionally, MPSC locals in New York City and Chicago became defunct by 1990.

Without the protections against runaway productions, studios increased their outsourcing, and by 2003, 90 percent of animation work for American studios was being performed in Asia.

In 1959, when Sleeping Beauty flopped in the box office, Disney laid off over 1,000 of its animators, and most of them went to Hanna-Barbera as a result since the studio was hiring animators at the time. Because of this, Hanna-Barbera had actually saved the animation industry from collapse. (3/9)
After reincorporating as Hanna-Barbera Productions, Inc., The Quick Draw McGraw Show (feat. Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy and Snooper and Blabber) and the theatrical cartoon short series Loopy De Loop followed in 1959.

Walt Disney Productions laid off several of its animators after Sleeping Beauty (1959) bombed on the box office during its initial theatrical run, with many of them moving to Hanna-Barbera shortly afterwards.

In August 1960, it moved into a window-less cinder block building at 3501 Cahuenga Boulevard West. Though too small to house the staff, some of its employees worked from home.

I regret nothing.😌 (I don't mean any disrespect to those who want to watch it, just don't interact with me if you're going to be talking about it and whatnot.) #BoycottCoyoteVsAcme #NoViolence #SaveHannaBarbera

Apparently, I just found out that AWI has a Bluesky account, so I immediately blocked them for the reasons I have already mentioned in my thread explaining why I don't like them. Needless to say, they're not going to be my problem anymore.😌
The Animation Workers Ignited Bluesky account, which I have blocked for personal reasons. I seriously don't like them.

Okay, I am calling out Small Screeno for their usage of an AI generated image featuring the Scooby-Doo gang in their recent Instagram post. It not only violates copyright laws, but it is also disrespectful to artists who are against AI. #NoAI #ScoobyDoo #HannaBarbera #SaveHannaBarbera

Hey everyone, I will be taking a break from Bluesky for a while for the sake of my mental health. The reason for this is because of a recent post which I responded to, and I've gotten bullied and harassed for what I said. I have blocked and reported a few users, including the post's author.
