Interviewer:
For Kore-eda: Nobody Knows (2004) is a film that, like Fujimoto-sensei drawing Look Back, is something that you felt you couldn't move forward without making. How was it while making this film?
Kore-eda:
When I was in my twenties, the incident that forms the basis of that film happened in Tokyo, and as I looked into it out of curiosity, various things started to click. Eventually, I just thought, "I can understand this boy better than anyone!" Of course, it was just an assumption, but I felt that I had to leave some kind of record no matter how long it took, not out of a sense of social justice, but a personal mission. Perhaps I wouldn't have been able to create it if I hadn't convinced myself of that.
Interviewer:
So it's like remembering things that catch your attention in everyday life?
Kore-eda:
I suppose it's more like a lingering feeling of unease. Regarding my previous film,, Sheep in the Box (2026), I had a similar feeling when I saw the news about reviving [enka singer] Misora Hibari using AI. I thought, "Is it really OK to do this?"and "Who said this is a good idea?"
