Another happy little clip from my #dystopian near future #queer #thriller. Had a lot of choices for this one, surprisingly.

Tension I didn’t know I was carrying drops away as I cry. Maybe for motherhood, maybe for childhood, maybe for all of it and none of it. Relief fills the void the tension left.
When she releases me and steps away I whisper, “Thank you. God. Thank you. I’d be dead or worse if it wasn’t for you. And here I am crying all over you with my stupid problems.”
“Hey, hey. That’s what Moms are for.”
I scan the photos for a distraction. I need to stop crying on this poor woman.

Alice flinched as Cloak suddenly appeared behind her, and the wide grin on the cat’s face certainly didn’t help, even though she wasn’t usually afraid of it. She didn’t manage to figure out their plan before the cat soared through Alice’s body. She started to shake violently and her mind became clouded with fear, but she couldn’t scream or react at all. She tried to move, tried to break free from whatever Cloak just did to her, but it was no use.
Reluctantly, she dropped the machete, collapsed onto the floor into a few of the hats, and everything went dark.

My hand — clammy — slips on the worn smooth pull on the reception door; brushing against the accumulated black crud that’s crusting the borders of where everyone touches. Takes a few tries to get a grip. I resist the urge to just let go and drive on. Head out to the horizon. Truly disappear. Odds are I’ll collapse and die in the desert heat if I try. I’m barely keeping it together now — thoughts moving like molasses. Driving? Even if I manage to stay on the road I’d probably run out of gas, and that’s best case if I stay conscious.
And, I remind myself, there’s a reason I chose this place, and that reason sure as hell wasn’t the reviews.

I can’t meet her gaze anymore. Avert my eyes. Stare at my hands tying themselves in knots.
