Really appreciate all the points, it's such a huge topic and I'm really glad to have the discussion continue! Haha probably worth a follow-up some day as well to clarify some of the points I made and continue diving into stuff I left unsaid

Mainly just talking to my former self who thought "I'm not good at visual arts, I'll never be able to make games." Hopefully providing encouragement for similar folks to give it a shot if it's something they've been too intimidated to try like I was

The goal was not to say "bad art is actually good!" but to challenge the general idea that art is something you're inherently good or bad at, and not something like game dev that you can learn by starting small, understanding your goals, and being aware of your weak spots

Haha as you said it's such a big subject so even in a longer form article like this, it was hard to not go down a giant rabbit hole for each point I leaned hard into the idea of being "bad at art" just because I see that pop up a lot in discussions, and it was a perception I had of myself

No need to apologize in the slightest, I really appreciate the perspective and the thoughtful response! I totally agree with much of what you said, specifically about "bad art" and "basic art" not being synonymous — I think I could've made that clearer

I've really been enjoying writing more longform stuff about game dev 🎨 This week I wrote about why I make my own visuals for my projects, despite my complete lack of art skills Would love to know how this resonates with fellow devs #gamedev #indiedev

My game just went live on Steam! It’s rail shooter like Star Fox, but your gameplay creates the soundtrack. Every wishlist means a lot 👽🙏

Nova Sonata on Steam
An on-rails musical shooter where the world is your instrument. Every shot, every movement, every enemy is a note in a soundtrack you're composing as you play.

Thanks so much for all the support! You rock. And yes what was on itch was more like a demo/proof of concept. What eventually will be on Steam is a full campaign with new levels, story, all that fun stuff

Fresh new trailer for #TrailerTuesday! My game lets you… ◦ Create music through gameplay ◦ Interact with musical alien worlds, each one a different genre ◦ Adapt to new on-rails gameplay (musical Time Crisis anyone??) #gamedev #indiedev #gamedesign #indiegamedevs

That means a lot, really happy the vision so far is coming across! It’s for sure super tricky to get all the audio and gameplay to match up, but when it does, it’s so satisfying. Thanks for the reply, excited to share more updates and a Steam page soon!

Can music games do more than just test your timing? Jammed on this idea a bit and dove into how I’m trying to do something different with my musical game. First Substack post! Check it out 🎸 #gamedev #indiedev #music #gamedesign

It’s alive! My 5 string guitar/bass/buitar is operational Current tuning: GCFA#D Wiring: Two 3-way switches to independently control the bass/treble sides of the pickups. Option to route the neck/bridge pickups to separate outputs Sound demo coming soon! #guitar #bass

Hahah yes exactly, or an argument I was having only with myself about wanting a bass VI with wider string spacing. Currently tuned like a higher register bass (ADGCF) but I’m still experimenting. Some people have suggested tuning in 5ths which could be fun

^ While I was at it I tweaked the audio for the laser attack as well. The crystal ricochet section in the video especially benefitted in the audio department

I was SO close to giving up on fixing a bug that broke the game for a playtester. I checked so much code before discovering it was an issue with the audio on the player’s attack Runs and sounds better than ever now! andything.itch.io/nova-sonata #gamedev #indiedev #solodev #starfox
