In recognition of the new Echo & the Bunnymen release having Ian firmly at the controls, my #CDFriday belongs to Mr. McCulloch. The CD reissues of his first two albums are well worth seeking out.

Ian McCulloch on CD and CD single. The generous reissues of his first two longplayers made my CD singles from that era redundant.

I live within 2 miles of the Monterey County Fairgrounds but feel a tinge of guilt at this time each year because I'm not interested in attending. They always book heavy hitters. Now if they revived the Monterey Pop Festival... montereyjazz.org

INXS #CDFriday

$My first tastes of the band were "The One Thing" and "Don't Change" via MTV back in 1982. Parent album, 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘩 𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘩, is decent but I only really like half of the songs ("spotty" would be kind for the first two albums ). But the run of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘓𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘓𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘴 and 𝘒𝘪𝘤𝘬 was fantastic. 𝘟 has some strong songs but was certainly a drop off from its predecessors. Although 𝘞𝘦𝘭𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘈𝘳𝘦 doesn't hold up all of the way through, it has many highlights and is very enjoyable (and impressive) for it's stylistic variations. By 1993, I wasn't really interested in the group anymore but heard 𝘍𝘶𝘭𝘭 𝘔𝘰𝘰𝘯, 𝘋𝘪𝘳𝘵𝘺 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴 and was intrigued by its darker edge. "Kill the Pain" in particular is haunting when considering the album came on the heels of Hutchence suffering a skull fracture via an altercation/accident and the subsequent fallout of his mood shifts and personality changes. It almost sounds like an Eno/Lanois production but, inexplicably, Eno actually mixed a different track on the album (Ray Charles and Chrissie Hynde also contribute). I was surprised how much I appreciated the album when revisiting it this year. Unfortunately, the album falls apart towards the end with none of that last three tracks making much impact. After a three year break which saw 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘏𝘪𝘵𝘴 released with a couple of good new tracks (is that Dave Gahan on the cover?), 𝘌𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥 was thrust upon the public. Considering how they had always been able to come up with the goods, even in the hardest of times, it's shocking how poor this album is. Such a shame to end it there, in so many ways...$

Mirrors don't get the credit they deserve considering their consistently strong Kraftwerk-by-way-of-OMD (with a bit of Delphic) output. Based on hearing their 2011 debut album, I sought out every other available track on CD. But by the end of that year, their output was download only. #CDFriday

𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘺 𝘚𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 EP, 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘖𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 CD from Germany, 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 CD single and the double disc edition of 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘖𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 from Greece

𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘺 𝘚𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 is pretty hearty for an EP. 9 tracks!

The German edition of 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘖𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 has a couple of bonus tracks, but the Greek edition makes it redundant.

A closer look at the Greek 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘖𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 tracklisting. The remix of "Secrets" by OMD's Andy McCluskey is especially good, and a welcome alternative to the sprawling 10 minute+ album version.

With a new album due in October, I've been revisiting the world of The Avalanches. In keeping with their kitchen sink approach, it's a random mixture of CD albums, EPs, singles and promos. #CDFriday

Her music wasn't what I usually would be drawn to but I respected that she wrote much of her own material when other singers didn't. I wanted a collection of her hits but also needed her early ballad, "The Bridge". It's much darker than The Sisters of Mercy version of "Jolene". #DollyParton #Goth

A promotional CD sampling highlights from her 2009 box set, 𝘋𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘺

I enjoy her hits as much as any pop music fan, but suicide ballad "The Bridge" is a haunting classic from very early in her career.

My #MontereyCarWeek (Including this # helps those who want to find the content, or mute it if they prefer) Thursday required an early start to catch the Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance before departure. This is when many cars that will be featured in Sunday's big show take a cruise around the area.

This week, my #CDFriday can only belong to one group.

I had 2011's reunion album 𝘔𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘓𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 at the time, and saw them on that tour. But its absence of Ben Orr and minimal input from Elliot Easton made it less vital to me.

I had seen them live in 1984 (with Wang Chung as support). They were criticized at the time for their unconventional shows and lack of engagement with the audience. But it was very refreshing for me at the time after going to mostly rock gigs (Kiss, Foghat, Rush, Ted Nugent, Van Halen) with my older siblings previously. I believe the only "New Wave" show I'd been to at that point was one featuring The Police, Thompson Twins, Oingo Boingo and The Fixx in 1983.
