Systems/Forms that ask for 'titles' really irk me. There seems to be little need to ask for them as most services never go on to use them.

It always amazes me how many conference websites have poor accessibility, yet those same conferences frequently host talks on the subject. It seems like they don't learn from the lessons of their speakers.

Today, I spoke at the inaugural #DUNC26 in Hull—a real gem of a city. The conference packed so much diversity of content into a one-day, one-track event, BUT! My favourite takeaway is that every single speaker listed a personal site/blog in their slides. I visited every one of them. What a day.

I'm listening to a podcast and they're talking about fatty caterpillars. A bit of a coincidence considering I'm on my way to speak about a hungry caterpillar at Developers Up North in Hull tomorrow. 🐛 #dunc26

I made the switch when Google became obsessed with giving me Gemini responses instead of search results. Overall it was a good decision to move to DuckDuckGo.

A perfect Lighthouse score doesn’t mean an accessible website
Chrome’s Lighthouse provides an invaluable tool for identifying accessibility concerns. However, people often misunderstand what the given score means.

You don't need to be using a screen reader to benefit from skip links. They're useful for people that navigate via keyboard.

As a non-driver, I use public transport a lot. However, the poor service has really impacted how I plan to get anywhere. I had high hopes for public ownership, but so far it's not been a positive move. Poor staffing levels feels like something they've had long enough to be in control of.

When I first moved to Sheffield there were 8 trams an hour into the city centre from where I'm based. That's now down to 5 and that's if you're lucky. The evening and Sunday services are even worse. It's no longer a reliable service.

Some using screen readers may be able to see the emojis, but for those that can't it's important the alt text makes sense to them. These are the people we write alt text for in the first place.
000
Andy Carter @andycarter.dev · 02/02/2026
They would work, but my advice would be to avoid them. Most people writing alt text will never test it using a screen reader, so will probably not understand how the emojis will be interpretted.

Andy Carter @andycarter.dev · 29/01/2026
Yes they have alt text of their own, but that text doesn't necessarily match expectations. It seems strange to use emoji for alt text when its intended audience is people who generally can't see images. Emojis are very visual.
