Fungi season is with us again. The @inaturalist.bsky.social app says this is weeping widow - a name suggesting it’s best not eaten!
Two small mushrooms growing on woodland floor. The caps are light brown, slightly scaly and damp from rain. Around are rotting wood, hornbeam seeds, grass and leaves.

Autumn is slowly arriving in the woods. An #icm #scape for #ForestFriday
Intentional camera movement creates a blurred, impressionistic image of woodland. A path leads towards a patch of light ahead. Trees are still in green leaf but the woodland floor is brown as vegetation is dying back after a long, hot, dry summer.

Deleted my previous reply as I realised the Guardian numbers weren’t for January. Turns out the predictions are for a 15% increase for electricity and 22% for gas in January.

Alternative reading is that knife crime in London rose by about 50% between 2016 and 2018 then remained roughly flat apart from a dip during lockdowns. More endemic than epidemic.

For those wanting data, knife crime in London was down in 25/26 compared to the previous year. It was lower during lockdown. www.statista.com/statistics/8...

Might be worth pointing out that the electricity unit rate cap is virtually unchanged from Oct 2025, but the gas unit rate cap is up over 25% year on year. Maybe renewables are keeping the cost of electricity down.

‘Grey lump with orange wings’: hummingbird hawk-moths descend on UK gardens

This hummingbird hawkmoth has been a regular visitor to the garden recently, though it took a while to catch it on camera. A shutter speed of 1/750th of a second just about froze the wings.
A hummingbird hawkmoth hovers while its proboscis is dipped into a pink phlox flower. The hawkmoth is mainly grey with a black and white abdomen. The wings have some black stripes and orange.

London Data Week #LDW starts today with an interesting and packed programme of free events (but book in advance): londondataweek.org/ldw26-events/ I will be giving a talk on Friday about revealing voting biases with 📊 following the recent local elections. londondataweek.org/ldw26-events...
BallotMap for London showing name-ordering bias in ranked votes

A grid of 32 squares arranged in an approximate diamond shape representing the 32 boroughs of London.

Each square is a London borough. Within each, the candidates for the main parties are shown as coloured lines (Greens: green, Labour: red, LibDems: orange, Conservatives: blue, Reform: cyan, Aspire: pink). They are ordered in rows where the top row is the alphabetically first candidate within their party and ward, the second row alphabetically second, and the bottom row alphabetically last. Darkest lines are those where the candidate received most votes within their party; medium lines where they received the middle number of votes within their party and lightest lines where they received the fewest.

Only those in ballots where they were one of three party candidates shown.

This allows us to see where people have split their vote between parties, choosing just one or two from the slate of three in a given party.

A darker lines in the top row compared to the bottom row of each square indicates voting perference for candidates with names closer to start of alphabet.

We see darker lines in the top row for every borough in London. Some boroughs with particularly strong name bias (strong contrast between top and bottom rows) include Enfield (Enf), Havering (Hvg), Bromley (Brm) and Merton (Mrt). Slightly weaker effects can be seen in Richmond (Rch) and Tower Hamlets (Tow) where party preference exerts a strong influence.

Voting data: Democracy Club, 21st May, 2026.
