On October 7th russia launched another massive attack on Ukraine. At least 24 people are dead & multiple injured. But if you look at major western media, this news do not appear in headlines anymore. This is how so-called "normalisation" works.

I think that these overnight phone calls from Nobel Committee quite nicely illustrate the general assumption that researchers should be always available, and respond to whatever enquiries 24/7. But do we really need that? IMO, everyone should have the right for protected time.

For a long time russia accused Ukraine of having "biolabs" while having their own huge collections of pathogens, and now has a plaque outbreak. The real question is how safe ru labs really are, because Y. pestis requires BSL3 & there are safety protocols incl. the case of breaking a tube with it.

Another typical question of different academic sociological surweys: who are/were person's parents. It's automatically assumed as the major factor/influence on person's life. But some people loose their parents early & rely on others [realtives, state care, etc.], and usually no one asks about this.

Yet another survey: - Do you use AI in your daily work? [Yes/No] - No - What AI app do you use in your work? I don't use AI in my work at all. And I think that in research/education our personal presence/availability for students, involvement & originality are way more important.

International scientific community is very diverse and consists of very different people. But the system also plays role, and based on my own experience I can say that russian full-scale war of aggression on Ukraine made/makes certain specific systemic issues in academia clearly visible:

In fact, such a flashmob shows complete misunderstanding of what russia is, and only encourages it to attack other democratic states. P.S. Decades ago there was a movement of scrapping the entire defence infrastructure with an argument that doing so will improve safety. And we all know how it ended.

Current tendency with research grant funding - quite a few people got max scores of their proposals but did not get funding. So, selection procedure does not work as intended anymore, and this creates even more uncertainty & precarity: if preparing a good proposal is not enough then what?

Just looked at PromethION hardware requirements and cannot stop thinking about one thing - these requirements are extremely high (almost ridiculous) just because ONT pushes live data analysis & basecalling during the sequencing. However, this is unnecessary & makes such a system way more expensive.

DW reported negative correlation between education level and voting for afg (people with better education are less prone to vote for it). This is one particular observation, general impact of good education is much wider & more profound. And that is why good accessible education is so important.

When you see any political party in Europe pushing russian agenda & advocating for "good relationships" with rf, just look closely on what russia is doing + real conditions inside it, and ask yourself whether having closer ties with it / bringing ru policies in your country is a good idea or not.

Quite often I see takes on importance of network of contacts in science. And it is indeed important. However, there are things almost no one publicly talks about: 1. Usually, the network of contacts is not single but three different ones - supportive, neutal, and opposing.

When I write my scientific papers, I write them for people. And I am responsible for what I wrote. Frankly, I would appreciate opt-out for AI interpretations of scientific papers because these could be wrong & misleading, and there is no responsibility either.

Andrii Tarieiev @andriitarieiev.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
I know that such a view might be not that common today, but if you read a scientific paper and have a need to clarify something, it is much better to contact the authours (if possible) instead of searching for an AI tool that would "explain" it to you.

Perhaps this is not that popular opinon but I think it coluld be quite helpful for students to achieve a better understanding of lab work when some old lab equipment and/or its parts is repurposed with the aim to demonstrate work principle instead of being scrapped.

Yes, this is also my point too. Research funding in Europe now has a problem: there are either large or small grants, but almost no mid-sized ones. The chances to get a large grant are very small, and the small one usually cannot cover the necessary expenses.

IMO, this only shows that US envoy has absolutely no understanding of russian war of aggression on Ukraine, and does not know history either. P.S. with such an approach russia may ask US to return Alaska at some point.

IMO it would be much better if they focus on doing something to hold contemporary war criminals accuntable. Opposing rapid development of AI is not a crime; waging a war & killing millions is. But no one talks about applying "pre-crime approach" to someone like putin at all.

Witkoff & Kushner said that "it would be nice to have negotiations in russian language". This is completely inacceptable, insulting and appalling. Because russian war on Ukraine with killings, tortures, explosions & all other crimes, and hybrid attacks in Europe is a sort of russian language too.

IMO, the assumption that any country in the world can have such immunity is one of the biggest mistakes one can make. P.S. If you want current extreme example, look at russia - it always claims its "absolute immunity against fascism" despite being de-facto a fascist state.

Paradoxes in international science: - scientists usually discouraged to have families, and then punished for not having them - one is expected to come for a short contract abroad, learn culture & language just as side activity, and leave the country almost immediately after the end of the contract

What worries me for a long time [both as scientist & a person] - systematic fueling of hatred against foreigners, refugees, international workers/researchers etc. They are often portayed as potential criminals/danger/evil. In reality there are very different people, and this should be considered.
