Texas people: Deep in the Heart 2, a beautiful, important new doc about our state's beautiful rivers and the fight to save our water (with Ethan Hawke as narrator) is out today. A good friend edited the film, and I played a very small part copyediting the script. Go see it this weekend if you can.

We have a release date! According to the publisher, our volume on late antique Syriac homilies will be released on Sept. 23. The website doesn't have a pre-order option, so mark your calendars! @philipforness.bsky.social @degruyterbrill.bsky.social
Cover image for a book: at the top, with white letters against solid purple background, the title is: "A Guide to Preaching and the Homiletic Genre in Late Antique Syriac Literature". Then in a different font color against the purple background: Edited by Philip Michael Forness and James Edward Walters. There is an image from a manuscript at the bottom depicting two well known preachers from the Syriac tradition: Ephrem and Jacob.

Wendell Berry had a unique, maybe singular gift to write out of both rage and calm, to string words together to unsettle in one breath, and to bring peace in the next. I’m really sad he’s gone.

I’m so glad that this is now available in paperback! Hopefully it will be useful and now even more affordable for people to assign it as a textbook.

The KU Leuven university library carillon is currently playing Dolly Parton songs. Hard to hear over construction but here’s “Jolene.”

I am happy to announce the publication of a new English translation of Jacob of Serugh's four homilies on Cain and Abel. It was wonderful to work on this project with Jeff Wickes! The homilies are fascinating theological and literary works: svspress.com/verse-homili...

Two years after submission, twenty-two years after conception, it’s published. I believe Sept. 28 is the official publication date in the US. Not sure about the UK and elsewhere. I’ll share a discount code when I receive one.

This. I live in Alabama, an impoverished state due to centuries of bad policies and political and economic inequality, where land is cheap. It’s one of the most diverse states in terms of race and biodiversity. But life is also cheap here. They want to build data centers in places like this.

Perhaps one day Microsoft will have the technology required to make footnotes automatically match the font you're using in the text of the Word document. But apparently that is far too advanced for now.

Very sad to hear this. Prof. Trout presented on the panel a colleague and I organized at this past NAPS. I had long admired his work and thus was slightly intimidated, but he was only kind, brilliant, and encouraging.
