I would like nothing more than YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING, easily my most desired pick, but the cold hard truth is it’s 2h54m and so even without an intro or Q&A it would wrap up after midnight. Just not going to happen (which for you: yay!)

100%. An uplifting true life-tale with broad appeal *and* cinephile interest… I’ll eat my shoe if it’s not this, Helen. Herzog style.

I know WICKER is scorchingly erotic, but it’s a bit much for someone’s vape to overheat and explode in NFT1. No injuries, apparently, but let nobody say the London Film Festival doesn’t go off with a bang.

Merritt Wever - knew the name, seen her in things (Michael Clayton, Marriage Story, Greenberg, Birdman, Signs); would have struggled to put a face to the name before today. But she is SO good in PRIMETIME. In a film of big performances I think it’s hers that I’ll remember the most. Phenomenal work.

I’ve seen John Malkovich in Wild Horse Nine (entertaining), and I’ve seen Andrew Scott in Elsinore (wonderful), and Scott’s performance is more deserving of recognition. But the Academy loves its thinly disguised lifetime achievement awards.

My 2026 has been a divorce-shaped Stygian nightmare of housing insecurity, drifting between Airbnbs, couchsurfing + housesitting. But the goddess just blessed me with my own tiny apartment! I need to move/furnish it for myself + kid almost from scratch: a humble call for help if you can to do so!

The ROGUE TROOPER movie (which is dedicated to the people of Ukraine!): Diane Morgan, Hayley Atwell, Matt Berry & Jermaine Clement are all fun, there’s decent use of The Animals, & the 2000AD covers over the credits gave me pure nostalgia. But you certainly can tell it was made using Unreal Engine.

2000AD issue 228 (8 Sept 1981): Rogue Trooper.

Olivia Colman is doing double duty on darkly humorous highly gendered fairy tales this year - in the UK’s WICKER and Australia’s THE FOX. Both playing the LFF (which starts tomorrow!), both with sharp scripts and stacked casts, and both really worth checking out! 💕

I love THE DEVILS (1971) and am super glad it’s available in a fully restored version, but I have a controversial opinion… THE BABY OF MÂCON (with which it has some points of comparison) is an even better film. And it’s long out of print on blu! Somebody do something!

Big fan of Josephine (w/d Beth de Araùjo), a tough film which is easily the best Channing Tatum or Gemma Chan have ever been, and boasts an incredible debut child performance from Mason Reeves. Tatum deserves that purported Tom Cruise best actor nomination tbh.

I dislike most “full life” biopics, as real lives tend not to be narratively satisfying. As a result, I mostly like things like Zodiac, Oppenheimer, The Social Network etc that focus on a shortish period/multiple ppl. For a longer period in someone’s life… maybe Raging Bull. Beyond that, Malcolm X.

Anything that isn’t “Doom victoriously creates a somewhat utopian Earth to rule over and mindwipes almost everyone so they think this was always the case” will be a surprise. I’m trying to think what the most likely actual surprise would be. A second Doom, played by someone else?

I'm kinda fully over that "the British conquered the world for spices and don't use any of them" joke because for one, you cannot recycle material for 5 straight generations and get a laugh worth a damn but also because in order to make it you have to agree with Tommy Robinson about who is British

He does the comedy so well (when he’s not being egged on to the point of indulgence by the director), but also he really sells the reunion with his mum, and the absolute PTSD tunnel vision when he kills Thanos.

IRON MAN casting news
Robert Downey Jr. confirmed to play the Marvel comic book hero for Paramount Pictures
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
September 29, 2006
Robert Downey Jr. is suiting up to star in "Iron Man," the first feature film to be produced independently by Marvel Entertainment. Jon Favreau is directing the movie, which will be distributed by Paramount Pictures.
Downey will portray Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who is kidnapped and forced to build a devastating weapon. Using his intelligence and ingenuity, Stark instead builds a high-tech suit of armor and escapes captivity. Upon his return to the U.S., he uncovers a plot with global implications and must don his armor and protect the world.
The comic debuted in the 1960s, and Iron Man's origin involved Stark being a prisoner of the Viet Cong.
The movie version, written by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby, will be set in today's geopolitical climate.
Marvel president of production Kevin Feige said the filmmakers looked for the best actor to embody the character.
"The Marvel characters are not just about how high they jump or how fast they fly, they're about their character flaws," Feige said. "They're about their inner demons. They're about the struggles that they go through between being a man and being a hero."
Downey worked hard to get the role, getting in shape and even growing a goatee like the one Stark sports in the comic books.
"In every casting announcement we've done, people in their mind's eye have their own view of it and let us know about it. We're used to it," Feige said. "The point is, we looked at everybody, and we found the best person for the role. It's as confident a casting move as we've ever done. The proof will be in the pudding, but he is Tony Stark."
The $100 million-plus-budgeted mo…
