Oh! I just realized that it must be like Danish "soft d" (the lenited fricative that sounds to others like a lateral).

I think that's "intrusive" (like New England intrusive r as in "the idear is", and so, diachronically, related to coda [l] loss). Bryan Gick has a great article about this phenomenon. idiom.ucsd.edu/~ebakovic/ph...

So I wonder if the lateral effect is somehow a byproduct of either (a) the interaction of an interdental and a preceding (if fleeting) velar offglide or (b) interdental lenition to some kind of (inter)dental approximant. Or do we hear a lateral just because coda [l] is velarized and there's a velar?

Andrew Garrett @andrewgarrett.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
Yes! Definitely there too. And @jofrhwld.bsky.social thank you so much for the spectrograms! I hear the effect you've shown in "dim", but there I do not have a lateral percept, so the lateral percept for me is there with "death", "breath", and "fifth". In "dim" I perceive just a fleeting [w].

Why, after writing a whole book on linguistics in which Ursula K. Le Guin figured prominently, did I learn only today that she wrote a story about "therolinguistics" in 1974? It is awesome: "The Author of the Acacia Seeds and Other Extracts From the Journal of the Association of Therolinguistics".

I wonder if this could simply be lenition of the fricative to a (voiced) interdental approximant, which in some languages can apparently sound lateral. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

I share that impression, though that intrusive [l] phenomenon is not supposed to happen before consonants.

Interesting! Breaking (the Southern "drawl") of a front vowel is not supposed to result in a labial glide, but I wonder if what has happened here is that the fricative is being realized as [f] (a known thing in some Southern dialects) and a labial glide is inserted. (Whence the lateral percept?)

Happy international cat day from the Toms of Atuan! (Ursula drew this on a postcard; you can also find the drawing in the Book of Cats).
A line drawing of four cats, captioned beneath, "The Toms of Atuan (who live on the Fartherest Shore)."

The first cat is curled up, croissant style, and looks disgruntled as he thinks "This is ridiculous." The second sits upright, and his speech bubble says, "Oh Marie! Marie! My own Marie!" The third cat is crouched as if to jump; his speech bubble reads, "Oomeoomeoo-meoomeoo." A fourth cat faces the viewer, standing, and says, "Err, Err, Err, myaaooww, Marie!"

In our era of conflict and tension, let us remember a kinder age when academics expressed only admiration and fond regard for their colleagues. Behold the correspondence of anthropologists Paul Radin and Carl Voegelin.
"Dear Carl: As usual your mental processes are difficult to follow. You ask me politely whether I wish to edit a perfectly inconsequential little manuscript like the Otomí & yet you send off without first consulting me, a rather consequential manuscript, the Patwin, to Harris. How come? [...]
Let me make myself clear upon this point. I do not recognize your right to do anything with the Boas' mss except return them to their authors upon demand. I feel sufficient wrought up about the matter to make it a public issue. As far as the Patwin mss, or any other of my mss, is concerned, I shall proceed to do exactly what I please in the matter and make my own arrangements about publication. I fortunately have a copy of the Patwin ms. So don't worry about it at all. It is my ms and it has only that status. There is no such thing as status in the Boas collection. Apparently power has gone somewhat to your head although you always had the possibilities of developing into a semi-fascist.
If I seem to be sharp, indeed oversharp, I do so deliberately so that you can pull yourself out of your subjectivistic haze and realize that you are living in a world of human beings and not in one composed of pseudo-logistic constructs á la Zelig Harris and some of the other contributors to the linguistic journal.
Apparently the same haze that is so evident in your Hitlerite disposal of properties made it impossible for you to understand the few questions I put to you in my letter. I did not ask you to look at my other linguistic mss. I asked an entirely different question, one in which I thought you would be interested. Apparently you were not, for I give you credit for understanding English. So forget all about my mss, those you have or those I have. I shall not let them have any further connection with you.
[] Paul
My best to Erminie. You certainly are lucky to have a wife who is not a logical positivist!"A typed letter:

"December 22, 1945

Dr. Paul Radin
2731 1/2 Dwight Way
Berkeley 4, California

Dear Paul:

Thanks for your spirited letter: it was just like having a visit with you in Berkeley.

I agree with your statment concerning the rights of authors. I sent your Patwin manuscript to my friend Harris who has much more editorial experience than I have and asked him to serve as editorial consultant on your Patwin, and to enlist Lee as an additional consultant. I do not feel competent to pass judgment on all manuscripts I see; it is out of this feeling of a lack of competence that I send manuscripts to editorial consultants. The only thing I can hope to gain by this procedure is linguistic insight, --certainly not power over manuscripts; such power remains in the hands of the authors, just as you say it does.

Erminie was properly complimented and sends you her love, and I mine.

As ever,
C. F. Voegelin"

Also, for a writing system mainly used in administrative records, I'd be skeptical of an interpretation based on a (putative?) prayer. So much flexibility in what such a thing might be saying, it's easier to find matches. The Kober et al. Linear B work was based on relatively banal content.

This, 100%
Calling the Yale document a report is a rhetorical device to manage institutional reputation in a time of aggressive government censorship and assaults on academic freedom as well as institutional autonomy. The “report” effects a performative display of guilt in the face of such rising authoritarianism. Its content likely reflects a desire to maintain avenues for fundraising with donors while attempting to placate a presidential administration keen to withhold federal grants and concoct reputationally damaging federal investigations.

I was surprised that @ucberkeleyofficial.bsky.social celebrated Charter Day yesterday with rhetoric suppressing the presence of Indigenous people. My take in my 2023 book is here too.
UC Berkeley: "On this day in 1868, Gov. Henry Haight signed an act catalyzing the audacious idea that California should have a great public university - one that would serve equally the children of immigrants and settlers, landowners and industrial barons."Another webpage celebrates “the audacious idea that California should have a great public university—one that would serve equally the children of immigrants and settlers, landowners and industrial barons” (UC News 2018). Not served, it seems, are the children of those whose land was taken.

The last lovely paragraph of a short obituary of the anthropologist Robert Lowie www.jstor.org/stable/43643...
In person, Lowie was fundamentally unassuming, slightly shy,
affectionate to family and friends. He claimed little, made his own
way, took with fortitude and serenity what fate dealt him. He was
candid, incorruptible, and loyal; it did not occur to him to scheme
or to suspect it as possible in his friends. His life flowed amiably and
cheerfully. Passions rarely shook him; his work pace was even and
cumulative. Although he did not return to Europe until 31 years after leaving it in boyhood, he remained a scholar in the old European tradition: respectful of learning in itself, imbued with its dignity, unexpectant of worldly rewards. Humane in attitudes, sedentary in habits, he was fond of discourse with intimates, and given to analysis but not argument; and he possessed the gift of true conversation, stimulating, gentle, wide-ranging. He is missed by all who came to know him. - A. L. Kroeber
