For sure. But the amount of times I've seen companies get locked into decisions or architecture that were clearly prototype-level is insane. Just because a table or column landed in the production database already doesn't mean that it's earning its keep. No excuse to do anything like that now.

Still true regarding big systems because of the risk involved. Great engineers threw code away all the time. That's the whole point of iterating. AI definitely redefines how big is too big to rewrite and at what pace, though. Throw away more code!

This! I'll add that compared to human language, any given programming language’s grammar is actually quite small and constrained, making them uniquely suited to LLMs.

Yup! Mermaid diagrams for both prompting and documentation have been one of the biggest gains I’ve had with Claude

Having done the former first then an 18 person version of the latter for our 10-year, the villa retreat will be absolutely special and unforgettable. You will not regret it

I’m with @lauraroeder.bsky.social on this. Just because I haven’t opened your emails in a while doesn’t mean I want to unsubscribe. I open fewer than 1/12 of any emails from a list at all but when I do it means I finally have time to be engaged, maybe even buy. “Cleaning” precludes this

Yes! Do it on week nights! No alcohol. Go home after 90min. Or less. Keep it casual. We needlessly make such a big deal out of dinner

We have a 20 min “how was your weekend” on Mondays before standup. It’s… ok. I don’t think anyone would mind not doing it

This part specifically drives me absolutely bananas. If your site has very specific password requirements then just generate a password for me and tell me what it is. Password generators don’t help here because you have to enter in the site’s specific weird requirements. Infuriating

I feel I know these should work but and yet I am somehow skeptical that anyone reads them. Either way ours need improvement and I should just hire you for this shouldn’t I?

Definitely not from summaries. In the past a 15 min pairing session could just disappear from memory in an instant. Today, if I pair with someone, we can get a full searchable transcript of the session with zero additional effort. That’s been a nice win for our team in the past year

Andrew Le @andrewdle.com · 05/12/2024
Yes! And add to that the new slate of AI transcription and summary tools and now the information is even more accessible than ever before

For entry level/fresh out of school roles, however, there is an element of “learning how to work” that is being lost imo. e.g. how to collaborate, focus, behave, present, and grow professionally. It’s hard to learn this sitting in your home office by yourself

We’ve found pairing to be most effective. And it’s much easier to pair remotely thanks to screen sharing rather than crowding around one monitor. Its so easy to hop on a huddle that I don’t miss the days of drive by questions or “hey can you take a look at this”

We follow up 3-4 times over two weeks then close the ticket if no response. It can be annoying sure but it makes a difference if you care about solving problems

Came down here looking for this. I knew there’d be some sort of raycast solution!

I played myself 🥲 I joined a concert choir this year, and we just performed our Christmas concert this past weekend. We've been preparing and singing Christmas songs since the beginning of September
