This summer, I was honored to be part of the Mattord Scholar program at KSU. The students selected for this opportunity get to pick a topic relating to the history of books, and explore it through both KSU’s rare book collection and field trips to other institutions.

My main rare book collecting focus has been canvassing books, which were used in door-to-door book sales. In addition, I have been trying to find pieces of ephemera that connect to these books.

📜🇺🇸 Printed on the night of July 4, 1776, the Dunlap Broadside was the first published copy of the Declaration of Independence, carrying news of independence across the colonies. See more remarkable items from the Internet Archive's collections👇 blog.archive.org/2026/06/29/t... #AmericanHistory
The Dunlap Broadside of the United States Declaration of Independence, printed in Philadelphia by John Dunlap on July 4, 1776. The document is headed "In Congress, July 4, 1776" and titled "A Declaration by the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress Assembled." The full text of the Declaration is set in period typefaces, opening with the "When in the Course of human Events" preamble and proceeding through the statement of self-evident truths, the list of grievances against the British Crown, and the formal declaration of independence. The document is signed in print by John Hancock as President and attested by Charles Thomson as Secretary, with the imprint "Philadelphia: Printed by John Dunlap" at the bottom. The broadside is printed on aged cream-colored paper.A close-up detail of the Dunlap Broadside showing the opening of the Declaration of Independence. Partial header text reads "United S[tates]" and "In Gene[ral Congress]." A large decorative drop capital "W" begins the preamble, followed by the text "HEN in the Course of" and continuing lines including "We hold these Truths," "unalienable Rights," "instituted among Men, deriving their just Pow[ers]," and "it is the Right of the People to alter," ending with the opening grievances "He has refused his Assent to Laws" and "He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws." The 18th-century typeface shows the characteristic long-s letterforms of the period. Printed on aged cream paper.

Before driving back to Georgia yesterday, Mom and I spent the morning at Shenandoah National Park. We started the day at Big Meadows Lodge, saw the view from the Blackrock Summit Trailhead, and then drove south on Skyline Drive.

This week at @rarebookschool.bsky.social was a very rewarding and educational experience! It was great to be back at RBS, see some familiar faces, and make new connections with other bibliophiles. I took the class on “Material Foundations of Map History, 1450-1900” taught by Michael Edney.

Every Kennesaw City Council meeting, Andrew Bramlett (History Kid) shows up with a cool bit of history. Meet Maxie Maxwell, Kennesaw’s first documented police chief. He organized a boxing match between the mayor and the city clerk to drum up interest. Who won? Nobody knows. History is wild.

I was researching newspapers yesterday and ran across these six illustrations - "Signs of Atlanta's Development" - from the Atlanta Journal in 1907. I thought these were an interesting window into the big construction projects of the era.

I haven’t shared a random collection item in a long time. This is one of my favorite photos from my collection, but I don’t think I have used it on Bluesky before. It shows Atlanta’s Century Building, which stood at the corner of Whitehall and Alabama from 1902 to 1976.
