We went to Pompeii, and one thing I learned is that the Greeks built there with solid marble while the Romans, a few centuries later, used cement or brick cores with some marble cladding. And damned if slapping a quick facade on a cheap core doesn’t sum up these guys’ use of “western civilization.”
