So had a funeral in Mataura, then popped in to Gore to do a quick job. Now it's the compulsory Gore Night 'N Day banana thickshake - about the best out there.

National have moved right. I always used to rate near them, but this year not so much. I'd just like to see Labour explain how they can fund everything with a laggy tax that's basically discretionary.

"Yes dad, we are snuggling. That's what all cats do, so just put down the camera ok?"

Friday night, a bit of xbox with a snoozy cat snuggling in to me. The best.

So two weeks ago New World was doing sugar free Solo, now this? Soft drink variety is looking up in NZ :)
A screenshot of the New World app showing a 600ml bottle of Dr Pepper Zero at $4.39. This is showing stock and pricing for the Windsor, Invercargill store so availability and pricing will depend on where you are.

So, shut down the Xbox, put the controller down with the intention of going to bed...someone has a different idea though....
Slinky the black cat snuggled between my legs on a recliner. He looks big but it's just perspective in the shot - he's actually a slender wee lad.

Sometimes you can get too much communication. I get alerts from Microsoft. All the time.... Some times it'd be nice to NOT know about every single little problem!

I don't normally do stickers on anything, especially not my laptop, so Tan gave me this one as a joke thinking I'd never do anything with it... So now visitors to my office see this.
My messy office, showing my desk, a storage cube shelf thingy behind it, and window. The meeting table I also have is not in shot. There's a sticker on one of the monitors. Close up of the sticker, which says "Warning. May start talking about my Maine Coon cat."

It's that time again, where the "oh I can take care of that for you" answer to clients upgrading catches up on me. DBAN and memtest86 ready for disposal on Trademe. Anyone want second to fourth gen Core PCs for free pickup in Invercargill?
A pile of old PCs on my workbench being erased. There are a couple of clones in Cooler Master and Silvertone cases, a Dell small form factor, two HP Prodesk G1s - small form factor and mini tower - and an HP 6300 Pro.

Oh and no packet loss reported (monitoring to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8), with latency reasonably constant. Voyager's higher latency is an active ticket with them.

Sleepy boys.
Two boys on the cat tower. On the left we have Slinky the black cat, curled up with beans showing, and on the right we have Arlo the Maine Coon with his head resting the white socks of his front paws. I only use Outlook Classic, the workflow is simple: File, Automatic Replies, Send Automatic Replies. Enter your time range and message. The Rules button is there, but you have to go out of your way to click it, and it gives you a cut down UI that doesn't have the "apply to current messages" option.

Hard to believe it's been a year since we said goodbye to Diva at 18.5 years old. She was a bit aloof and stand-offish with me, but absolutely loved Tan and Sarah - a little unfair seeing I was the one that snuck her little licks of whipped cream when she was a kitten! I miss little DVD.

And section 50.

They do. Section 44, Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.
Section 44 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. Text says:

44 Duty of officers
(1) If a PCBU has a duty or an obligation under this Act, an officer of the PCBU must exercise due diligence to ensure that the PCBU complies with that duty or obligation.
(2) For the purposes of subsection (1), an officer of a PCBU must exercise the care, diligence, and skill that a reasonable officer would exercise in the same circumstances, taking into account (without limitation) -
(a) the nature of the business or undertaking; and
(b) the position of the officer and the nature of the responsibilities undertaken by the officer.
(3) Despite subsection (1), a member of the governing body of a territorial authority or regional council elected in accordance with the Local Electoral Act 2001 does not have a duty to exercise due diligence to ensure that any council-controlled organisation (as defined in section 6 of the Local Government Act 2002) complies with its duties or obligations under this Act unless that member is also an officer of that council-controlled organisation.
(4) In this section, due diligence includes taking reasonable steps—
(a) to acquire, and keep up to date, knowledge of work health and safety matters; and
(b) to gain an understanding of the nature of the operations of the business or undertaking of the PCBU and generally of the hazards and risks associated with those operations; and
(c) to ensure that the PCBU has available for use, and uses, appropriate resources and processes to eliminate or minimise risks to health and safety from work carried out as part of the conduct of the business or undertaking; and
(d) to ensure that the PCBU has appropriate processes for receiving and considering information regarding incidents, hazards, and risks and for responding in a timely way to that information; and
(e) to ensure that the PCBU has, and implements, processes for complying with any duty or obligation of the PCBU under this Act; and
(f) to verify the provision …

I was making gravy at the time. Turns out my S24 Ultra just stops sounding after a surprisingly short time if you ignore it! As for the "always getting alerts" cookers on Facebook, it seems to be used so sparingly the last test is still in my history!

Economically important means things like transport, food supply chain and primary production. Essential is public transport, infrastructure, rural GPs. I think rural GPs probably should rate in B but that'll be why they're consulting.

I asked Copilot - I know, not perfect and it's just an LLM but its a handy tool get a quick answer that can later be confirmed.
Who is immediately in trouble
High risk / likely exits

TP‑Link (obvious)
Tenda
Xiaomi
White‑label ISP routers
Any brand fully dependent on Chinese ODMs

Even if manufactured in Vietnam or Malaysia, the phrase “regardless of nationality of the producer” matters. Jurisdictional influence is the issue, not just geography.“Maybe, but painful”

Netgear
ASUS
Linksys
Amazon eero
Google Nest

They could apply — but:

They don’t control silicon
They don’t control fabs
They don’t control ODM firmware practices

Expect:

Long delays
SKU reductions
Possibly “US‑only” product lines that quietly fail to launchStructurally advantaged

Starlink
Potentially US‑assembled x86 appliances
Very small domestic manufacturers with vertically integrated stacks

Starlink, in particular, suddenly looks accidentally compliant:

US manufacturing
US PCB fabrication
US firmware control
Defense ties
Existing DoD/DHS relationships

That’s not coincidence — it’s alignment with the assumptions behind this policy. The big, unavoidable irony
This policy is framed as:

“protecting American homes, businesses, critical infrastructure, and emergency services”

But the short‑term effect will almost certainly be:

Fewer router choices
Higher prices
Slower refresh cycles
More legacy, unpatched equipment staying in service
ISPs re‑using old stock because replacement SKUs aren’t approved yet

You’ve been around long enough to know this pattern.
Security policies that ignore manufacturing reality almost always produce worse security outcomes for a few years before markets adapt — if they ever do.
