So all these nice corpora gated behind bad search interfaces, useless KWIC views, OCR behind scans, browser-only, no download. Now you can just get codex/ccode to dissect the urls/search/display interface until it figures out how to scrape anyway and have it download full datasets? How convenient.

Actually, more I think about it, for academic-industry incentives (more papers&cites; not the same as good science goals) the quality doesn't even matter that much :/ Sure could be improved, but as more ppl use agents, what matters is whether its enough GEO'd to get cited by agents &pass AI review.

That's not a "real" paper btw But in a recent workshop for @digitsut.bsky.social I talked AI agents &how it's now trivial to gen full (tho likely mediocre) papers&theses in ~1h. Asked for example topic, had codex mine data&write; they uploaded it w slides Now Google Scholar wants to index it.

In light of recent AI writing debates, NeurIPS rejecting papers based on AI-detector results (lol), and certain academics piling AI user colleagues on the other app... What is actually more important in an academic paper: - the prose, narrative, writing, or - the question, method, result, insight?

Amazing scene at a socsci internet research seminar. At the end a comp sci guy asks if there's maybe practical takeaways, action points we could summarize. A problem yes, but I suspect a lot here stems from reference management practices ("I do refs by hand" crowd) in academia generally, amped by AI. What amazes tho is that these 30% profit margin companies 3yrs in have not invested enough yet in automated ref checking (easier if DOI&bibtex required)

Another day, another clearly AI generated review for a paper. Is that now the new normal, like, academics and editors just quietly accepted it? Hollow words asking us to randomly "discuss more", "consider this", "address that", and we're supposed to respect it as expert opinion to follow?

Lil late to the "AI is killing edu" party, as I haven't been teaching students as much as training educators &businesses last 3 yrs, but I guess I now know the pain of having to assign A to the perfect (likely AI) submission and a C to the imperfect but likely human attempt. Is there a word for it?

Latex is amazing. In what other programming language do you make an error in 2025 and get told to go read a book from 1984 to solve it, and if the book is too long, no problem buddy just look up the term "weird error" in the index, easy.

Humanities can greatly benefit from ML/AI (esp with the wealth of data digitized now), and could & should be at the center of the AI revolution to help design smarter, less biased, more human and humanistic models. Unfortunately, in many places this sort of dogmatic romantic primitivism prevails.

Why (and who the hell) still teaches ppl that for content analysis style coding/annotation, one should convert values of categorical variables in the coding scheme into some weird numeric codes? Completely unnecessary, and at worse leads to using incorrect stats like correlation. But keep seeing it.
