I think Julia Hörath's various publications on the issue are also important (though most are in German).

It's quite depressing that we still have to clarify these things these days. I would perhaps add to your thread that "preventative" detention of "anti-social" elements was practised in Germany well before the Nazis. The Nazis just stripped away contraints and radicalised already existing practices.

Germany from the 1870s until the late 1990s had "ius sanguinis" citizenship laws (abolished under the Red-Green Coalition). Of course, the Nazis used the principle and applied in the most extreme way under the Reich Citizenship Law of 1935, stripping most Jews and many "aliens" of their citizenship

It's actually closer to two pints, since a "Maß" is roughly one litre.

The one thing no one is talking about anymore is the total disappearing of the FDP from #German politics. They were part of Chancellor Scholz's "Traffic Light Coalition", but seem to have entirely disintegrated.

Well, Giffey came from the Buschkoswky wing of the Berlin SPD, who always tilted right and saw the Left and Greens as the actual 'enemy'.

Andre Keil @andrekeil.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Hear me out... the bigger story is the doubling of votes for the Left Party in Berlin, not the entirely predictable rise of the AFD in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Tentatively optimistic about the #German local elections today. I have a feeling that results in #SachsenAnhalt two weeks ago were the result of very Sachsen-Anhalt factors and mentalities than being entirely representative for everyone in East Germany. We shall see...

What will happen is that AI will be used to sift through all these (AI-written? Too cynical here?) funding bids. The 5000 or so who survive the first cull will entered into a randon draw. There's no way traditional (human) peer review can cope with this amount.

I think the Nazis completely underestimate just how popular and beloved the RNLI is... one of the few British institutions one can be unreservedly proud of.

Pioneering TV really. If you want to understand what's going on former East Germany today, I thoroughly recommend the German equivalent "Die Kinder von Golzow"... very moving portrayals of East German biographies, particularly the "shock" of 1989 and the dislocations of the 1990s.

Bill Bryson on the RNLI in "The Road to Little Dribbling : more notes from a small island" (2015)
I had never really stopped to consider what an extraordinary thing the Royal National Lifeboat Institution is. Think about it. A troubled ship calls for help, and eight people - teachers, plumbers, the guy
who runs the pub - drop everything and put to sea, whatever the weather, asking no questions, imperilling their own lives, to try to help strangers. Is there anything more brave and noble than that? The RNLI - I looked this up later - is an organization run by volunteers, supported entirely by public donations. It maintains 233 stations around the coast of Britain and averages twenty-two call-outs per day. It saves 350 lives a year on average.

Very sad news indeed. I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Konrad Jarausch a few years ago in Cambridge. He was an inspiring person, a public intellectual, and, most importantly, one of the most influential historians of modern Germany in the 20th and 21st centuries.

This is a fairly normal thing in Europe. Kids often stay in their home cities to study if they have a semi-decent university. I worry much more about those who don't have one on their doorstep and who can't afford to move to attend uni.

Another interesting side note is Antje Hermenau's presence on stage. Remarkable political development from being a "Bürgerrechtlerin" to one of the few East German Greens to now this... At some point, it's probably time for a historical re-appraisal of the "DDR-Bürgerrechtsbewegung".

Hot take: The #TourdeFrance is already decided. Pogačar is just too dominant. And as much as I love watching it on TV, the competition is just one-sided and boring. Clearly, Vingegaard is not up to it, and the Seixas hype was over before it even began.
