aside: large screen are usually a negative. Long lines are hard to read; effectively using 2 columns is time consuming and difficult for the presenter

The influence of hidden researcher decisions in applied microeconomics

Does anyone recall a recent paper in economics (published 2024 I think) where the Principal investigators were trying to verify how results would differ if the same idea was given to different researchers? Data/basic info about the question were given and researchers were free to pick how to answer

turns out, figtext is a pyplot method so no way to intervene on the axes. This seems to work fine though, fig, ax = plt.subplots(1,1) ax.plot(np.linspace(0,1,100),np.linspace(0,1,100)) ax.set_title('caption text here',y=-.15,loc='left')

for some reason, when I define the chart with fig, ax = plt.subplots(1,1,figsize=(3,4)) neither ax.figtext(...) nor fig.figtext(...) work... only plt.figtext... this is above my paygrade

you're right that they make it hard to find :-)

the row at the top of the chart is using axes.set_title, the note below is the code above

Andrea M0r0 @andreamoro.bsky.social · 09/11/2023
Found it, finally use plt.figtext(0,.01,"put a note here", ha="left", fontsize=8)
110
Andrea M0r0 @andreamoro.bsky.social · 03/11/2023
btw have you tried plt.title('note text', y=-0.01)
100
Andrea M0r0 @andreamoro.bsky.social · 03/11/2023
... obviously, graphing includes typing inside the graph, and python does that well. Typing outside the chart is also possible but difficult and best handled by your typesetting software for many reasons.

Andrea M0r0 @andreamoro.bsky.social · 03/11/2023
I see your point, in principle one should be able to do anything, and in fact it's possible. But you are a bit caricaturizing the "python users" response. Lots of people want to do that in fact but graphing software should do graphs first...

Andrea M0r0 @andreamoro.bsky.social · 02/11/2023
Hah sorry I thought you meant legend. Captions... why would you use graphic software for captions? There's LaTeX for that. Use the subfigure package if needed.

Reading this passage from Chapter 32 of Pride and Prejudice it occurred to me: is Darcy on the spectrum? Taciturn, steadfast gaze, social awkwardness, truthful when most inconvenient (think of the first proposal). It makes an entirely different reading of the novel (this is my 3d time)

Andrea M0r0 @andreamoro.bsky.social · 21/10/2023
I am not sure there is an alternative. The default does a pretty good job at putting captions in the emptiest area, once you deviate how can it not be manual?

4) A bit like when asking to compute numerical equilibria in introductory micro is a question about algebra, not economics. And I hate those questions. In the end, a decent exam preparation tool for "mini-essay" style questions

3) Sometimes, when asked a sequence of subquestions on the same topic, the answers are not mutually consistent. Asking students to comment is more an exercise in logic than a test of economics. 4/

Two great shows with a very similar concept but different topics. Winning Time about the rise of the Lakers in the 80s and White House plumbers about the Watergate. The concept is a historical narrative that tries to be accurate, but the characters are caricatured with hilarious effects.
