I remember with fondness and nostalgia my meeting with Roland C. Wagner, in 2002, at an Italian convention. He bought an inflatable plastic Godzilla at a local fair and carried it around all day, tied to a string like a leash, even bringing it to the panel table where he was participating.

“Caduto per la libertà senza sbocco”. “He died for a freedom with no way out.” (Context in ALT text)
"Caduto per la libertà senza sbocco".
Photo of a marble plaque bearing the name of a street in Genoa, Italy. Beneath the name of the partisan after whom the street is named, the words “Fallen for freedom” are inscribed, and someone has handwritten “no way out” to indicate that the street is a dead end. This, however, gives rise to the surreal phrase “He died for a freedom with no way out.”

I'm finally a published poet! 😁 Oh, well, no—it's just my response in rhyme to the question "Why do you like Strani Aeoni?" posed to contributors of the Italian publishing and writing group of the same name, all compiled into an ebook. straniaeoni.blogspot.com/2026/10/cozy...
Dall'alveo mio sommerso
nel mare da milioni
d'anni, il mio sonno è perso.
Né morte né stagioni,
né afflato mai diverso
d'astri o rivoluzioni
d'orbite a un sole avverso
placaron mie pulsioni,
la sete mia attraverso
sogni di libagioni
di umane menti, a un sorso
svuotate di ragioni
e senno, in un perverso
brindisi alle abiezioni
di un più folle universo.
Per tali e altre questioni,
dichiaro incontroverso,
mi piace "Strani Aeoni"
ché alla follia è converso.

From my riverbed, submerged
in the sea for millions
of years, my sleep is lost.
Neither death nor seasons,
nor any ever-changing inspiration
from stars or the revolutions
of orbits around an adverse sun
have appeased my urges;
my thirst, through
dreams of libations
from human minds—emptied, in a single gulp,
of reason and sense—in a perverse
toast to the abject depths
of a madder universe.
For these and other reasons,
I declare without dispute
that I like “Strani Aeoni”
because it is devoted to madness.

"C'è grossa crisi". Sorry, only Italians will get this.
Photomontage: a scene from “2001: A Space Odyssey,” but with the wooden, nail-studded idol of “Quelo” in place of the monolith, surrounded by prehistoric ape-men. Quelo is the idol of a pseudo-religion promoted by an unlikely guru, a television character created by Italian comedian Corrado Guzzanti in the late 1990s. “There’s a major crisis” was his catchphrase.

These are short stories, anecdotes, and reflections written in the form of letters—sometimes ironic, sometimes moralizing. In fact, there is little of interest, but the little book is fascinating because of its relative age!

October 12 will mark the birth anniversary of uncle Edward Alexander “Aleister” Crowley. A pictoresque character that I don’t like at all, but back then I still created one of my photo-montages of him—featuring one of my sculptures, as usual—which was published in the ebook “The Weirdles.”
Black-and-white photo-montage: a young Aleister Crowley crouched in an armchair, with a notebook on his lap. To the right behind him stands a human statue with a snail’s head divided into two protrusions, its arms positioned in the obscene gesture known as the “bras d’honneur.” In the background is a dark stone wall with mysterious inscriptions carved into and around a bas-relief circle.

"Surrounding the head is a series of tentacles. The lizard does not have the tentacles, this being a feature of the octopus; and this (...) results in a composite creature which might better be described as a mythical monster." It sounds like #Cthulhu, but it comes from a 1907 archaeological text...
A page from a book featuring a reproduction of an archaeological artifact: an incomplete slab depicting a mythological creature with the body of a lizard and the head of an octopus. From "The Antiquities of Manabi, Ecuador. A Preliminary Report" by Marshall H. Saville, Columbia University, New York, 1907.A page from a book featuring a reproduction of an archaeological artifact: an incomplete slab depicting a mythological creature with the body of a lizard and the head of an octopus. From "The Antiquities of Manabi, Ecuador. A Preliminary Report" by Marshall H. Saville, Columbia University, New York, 1907.Plate XXXIII, which is also illustrated in Fig. 4. Surrounding the head is a series of tentacles. The lizard does not have the tentacles, this being a feature of the octopus; and this, joined with the lizard-like body and the rear extremities (resembling those of the female figures), results in a composite creature which might better be described as a mythical monster. Between the two tentacles which reach out from the lower
part of the face is a bat with outspread wings, on the upper part of which, on each side, may be seen a hook. The head is in profile with a "leaf" nose. On each side of the head of the monster, between tentacles, are two moderate-sized discs. The bas-relief is 31 inches (78.7 cm.) high, 17f inches (44.8 cm.) wide, and 2^ inches (5.7 cm.) thick.
Plate XXXIX represents the other bas-relief of a mythical monster. A greater part of the middle of the sculpture is missing, but in a general way the treatment of this sculpture is much more geometric and angular than that on the preceding plate. The vertebras are represented on the upper part of the back. The treatment of the rear extremities is similar to that in the other sculpture, with the exception of the ribbon-like appendages and the separation of the thighs by a tail extending from the diamondshaped body, and partly curved around the right thigh. The head of the animal is different from the other, but the salient features are brought out in the face. At the lower part of the head are six tentacles; the two nearest the face are grecques ; the two on each corner end in spirals; while the two at the base of the face are represented in the same manner as in the bas-reliefs on Plate XXXYIII. Between them is a large circular disc. On each side of the sculpture are terraced designs. It is 26^ inches (67.3 cm.) high, 17 inches (43.2 cm.) wide, and 1| inches (4.4 cm.) thick.

Five men in muddy work clothes pose on either side of a stele depicting Cthulhu emerging from R'lyeh. The upright stele is propped at the bottom by a short pole and chained to a winch attached to a structure of rough wooden poles that holds it aloft in the center of an excavation, surrounded by piles of turned-over earth, shovels, and other work tools. An irregular slab of grayish stone, carved in bas-relief with the figure of an “Elder One” alien from H.P. Lovecraft’s "At the Mountains of Madness"—a creature with a barrel-shaped body and a large, star-shaped head. The figure is surrounded by inscriptions carved in indecipherable symbols. Uh... I'm sorry, but it's not an alien artifact: I carved it out of a slab of sandstone paving stone twenty-five years ago.

For the record, my obsession with Lovecraftian photomontages—which has lasted for over a quarter of a century now—is entirely due to Mr. J.K. Potter and his cover art for Heavy Metal (October 1979, special issue dedicated to H.P. Lovecraft).
A traditional photomontage by J.K. Potter, in black and white with a blue tint, featuring an ornamental frame. It is a portrait of H.P. Lovecraft standing with a book in his left hand, with an alien being to his left — a tall creature with a starfish-shaped head —, both set against a rocky, otherworldly background under a dark and starry sky.

Over the past month, between heatwaves and depression I’ve done practically nothing. And without internet, for the little I did I had to draw on pics from my own archives. So, those featured in my last animation are actually my maternal great-grandparents, photographed in Pittsburgh, maybe in 1900.
A sepia-toned photograph from the early 1900s, framed within an oval, portraying a married couple: he is wearing a formal suit and sitting on a chair; she is standing to his right in a white dress, with one hand resting on his arm.Photo-montage on a sepia-toned photograph from the early 1900s, framed within an oval, portraying a married couple: he is wearing a formal suit and sitting on a chair; she is standing to his right in a white dress, with one hand resting on his arm.
