Yea, the North Slope and YT-NWT border Mac Pass area equally littered with rusty streams, and on an impressively grander scale. Good to know about western NU, haven't scoped around there yet.

That film was certainly pretty. It's great for engagement with non-scientific audiences. We're lucky this phenomenon is so aesthetically striking, not withstanding all the amazing hydrogeochemistry and hydrology driving this. It was shocking discovering how pervasive this is in central Yukon.

New study: As lice pressure increased, the specific growth rate of returning fish declined. "Wild-origin fish had a greater return rate than hatchery-origin fish at all levels of lice infestation pressure, with the difference increasing with increasing pressure" academic.oup.com/icesjms/arti...

I'm currently looking for an MSc student to characterize water ages and storage in cold catchments. Several potential projects available, and I will support students who want to develop their own! If interested, please reach out soon at akgrewal@usask.ca, as Sept 2026 app deadlines are approaching!

Gonna highlight another example of how you can think things are bad or getting worse when the opposite is probably true. Here's a story framed a certain way last year while I was still on vacation. Takeaway: "the province is a dangerous place for pedestrians and cyclists." But is it true?

You know you're a grizzled late-stage PhD student when the first year students, on campus for the first time, hold the door open for you and call you 'sir'. T+2 days

1. Accurate (unbiased and precise) quality controlled data are essential for understanding and monitoring trends in river temperature. However, researchers often collate and analyse data without consideration of these issues. A new 📜 & summary🧵 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

The Influence of Equipment Bias on Reported Temperature Trends: Implications for River Temperature Monitoring Networks
River temperature is an important control on ecosystem health. Concerns around climate change impacts and availability of lower cost sensors have led to an increase in temperature monitoring of aquat....

Wow, here's the Yukon River ice break-up in the territory of the Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin. Our research group at YukonU had boots on the ground and eyes in the sky (plane/UAV) to make observations. These observations help researchers create models to better predict and respond to flooding due to ice jams.

Happy field work Friday! Had 2nd year undergraduate students out measuring stream flow on @mcmasteruniversity.bsky.social west campus this week for a hydrology lab session. Despite a couple leaky waders, the students loved the practical hands-on experience. We saw a mink too! 🦦 #Neature
Students measuring streamflow using the velocity-area method. We tested salt dilution gauging as well, meaduring the electrical conductivity on both banks. No surprise that this stream is not well suited for that measurement method!

Flickr has a pretty different audience though than insta, tiktok, or this new bluesky Flashes platform. I guess mostly because Flickr doesn't have the same influencer rot as the others.

If what you wish to emphasize is how different 2012-2013 is in comparison to the other periods, option A has more 'ooomph'. But for an environmental / earth scientist audience, the log plots are waaay more informative imo. I vote option B, with a caption to provide emphasis as needed.

Another field work photo from Yukon, Canada. This one shows pH dependent mineral precipitation at the confluence of two streams. The white colour is from aluminum precipitates and orange colour is from iron precipitates. This phenomenon results from natural weathering of shales.
Confluence of two streams green bushes and blue sky. Stream on left has white colour and stream on right has orange colour.

not to mention the impact of land use/land cover changes on hydrological processes, which add a whole other level of complexity when considering future projections! But I'm sure we hydrologists vex others too. I heard an ecohydrologist say "y'all just think of plants as straws that suck up water".

First salt tracer study successfully completed in my Yukon study streams!! Lots of surface and subsurface transient storage in these permafrost-rich headwater streams. Having some good tunes makes the stirring much easier. Many thanks to Matt Lindsay at USask for lending the geopump!
