And so it continues... Our economic debates seem utterly disconnected from the reality. That reality: This is an economy mostly creating healthcare jobs, and it does so month after month, and everything else is just noise.
Line chart titled "Effectively all of the net job creation has been in healthcare and social assistance, and jobs are shrinking in the rest of the economy" showing change in non-farm payrolls since January 2025 through September 2026. Healthcare and social assistance added 998,000 jobs with consistent growth throughout the period, while the rest of the economy lost 222,000 jobs, meaning all net job creation came from healthcare. The rest of the economy showed particular weakness from May through August 2025 when losses reached 218,000 jobs. This striking divergence reveals an unusual concentration where one sector's growth of roughly 48,000 jobs per month has offset persistent contraction across all other industries combined.

Roger was a good man, funny in person and funny in print, empathetic and with unimpeachable integrity, and gracious to young-cub journalists who didn't know what the hell they—we—were doing. Taught me uncountable lessons about how to do journalism and how to be a journalist.
A tweet from journalist Dan Balz: I am so sad to report that Roger Simon died early this morning. He had been ill for some months but went peacefully at the end. He was a brilliant journalist, a gifted columnist, the author of many books about presidential campaigns and other things. He was also wickedly funny. He was courageous in the face of adversity that befell him more than a dozen years ago. So much to be admired. He was Chicago born and worked there and in Baltimore before closing out his remarkable career in Washington, lastly at Politico. He and I met as college journalists and he and his wife Marcia became the dearest of friends with my wife Nancy and me for 60 years. I mourn his loss and know so many others will too. RIP, Friend.
