Identity crisis? What identity crisis. 🙄 A 10nF capacitor that knows it’s really a 310kΩ resistor. 🤣

With AI tools already used to create everything from “art” to propaganda and bioweapons humanity is in danger of becoming like a monkey in charge of an excavator who might use it to find more nuts. As his excavator becomes more and more powerful the potential for destruction is immense.

Has your spout stopped swivelling freely. Schoolboy humour aside there’s a grub screw hidden at the base of it which retains it to the main body of the tap. Once removed the spout can be pulled out and the rotating surfaces can be cleaned. I can swivel my spout with one finger now. 🤣🤣🤣

And, of course, she’s sounding great. I wonder if the post Internet generation get what a big thing shortwave listening was back in the day. It opened up the world. ✨

The Trio R-2000 is fully restored and shrugging off her 40 years on this planet. 😍

The Trio R-2000 is done bar putting the covers on. A nice little receiver.

Despite going on sale in 1957, just one year after the first transistor radios were released here in the UK, it produces a nice clean signal at the speakers when it receives a decent signal over the air. Of course styling was still rooted in the old valve “portable” paradigm but that soon changed!

I was able to hide some modern electrolytic capacitors inside the bodies of the old (failed) ones (re-stuffing) but for some it just wasn’t possible. To a casual observer I hope the signs of restoration aren’t too in your face.

I had hoped to leave the 1957 Invicta Portable Model 30 in original condition but it was barely receiving even the two strong MW stations we still have left in my part of the UK. Now it sounds like it would have to my grandfather when he bought one in the fifties. 😎

The latest addition to my film library. They don’t make ‘em like this any more. 😱🤣🤣🤣

Just Wow, Wow, Wow! A shame about the Booster (they’ll sort it) but I am finally beginning to believe that the Ship design can be human rated. Transformative is often overused but not in this instance. 👏👏👏👏👏

From BBC Radio 3 on FM just now. Sweet to my old ears at least. ☺️

From a sooty mess with a broken dial glass that could barely be heard at full volume to a sweet sounding radio. Quite a challenge and one I had put off for a couple of years because of that dial glass. By no means an invisible join of the pieces but it will have to do.

Just arrived. It might look modest but the Invicta Portable Model 30 was released in 1957. The first transistor radio ever sold in the UK was in 1956 so this is real history and it still works! My grandfather had one so you can imagine my delight when I found such a pristine and original example. 😍

She now picks up California! 🤣 A couple of firsts: the first time I’ve been able to use the stereo Bluetooth output ("stereo" radio) and the first time I’ve had space for a discrete Bluetooth chassis mount. The iPad Pro doesn’t do justice to the bass response, albeit still using the shop speakers. 🥰

She's come a long way from a filthy old chassis that could hardly make a noise through the speakers. And another first for me as she's the first vintage valve radio I've had with a THD (total harmonic distortion) under 0.4% at normal listening levels. Still picking my jaw off the floor for that one!

My first "visual alignment" using my new spectrum analyser instead of a sweep generator and an oscilloscope connected to the AGC voltage. Much better precision and a very welcome doubling of the output signal. The "Before" curve looked deceptively good and I nearly didn't bother!

A bitter/sweet moment for yours truly. The Lockheed L1011 (aka Tristar) was my first longhaul type and, with the obvious exception of Concorde, was the best aircraft I ever flew. So sad to hear, courtesy of NSF, that this one is the last airworthy Tristar flying. 😢 www.youtube.com/watch?v=oU-J...

I know it’s been said before but apart from the crew off to the left every human in the universe is living on that planet in front of us. Evolution has not optimised us to live elsewhere but we badly need to make it happen. So fragile!

Damn! It’s almost working on FM (AM is deaf but that isn’t surprising given the ferrite is disconnected) so I suppose that means I’ve got to try and restore it! 😱🤣

Yet to be cleaned of course, let alone glued, but the good news is that most of the glass is present although there is a bit of a divot at the major intersection. But before I attempt that I need to see if the radio is electronically viable!

The next patient. Every restorers nightmare: a broken dial glass. I’ve been looking for a replacement for well over a year but with no luck so I’m just going to have to bite the bullet. This one may be my toughest challenge yet. 😱

The Philips Hurricane de Luxe 50IC361 is nearly done. Just some cosmetic touches but I thought I'd share. Possibly one of the best sounding transistor radios of its size ever? This one, an '07 variant, was probably made in 1975 and rrestored 51 years later by yours truly. 😇

Success - only a 30º turn needed to free the pivot point! Just a quick test before the needle is zeroed and the meter calibrated. Almost impossible to source but now that I have it working I know it’s worth spending money on an electronic restoration.

I’m now making a start on the next patient, a Philips Hurricane de Luxe 50IC361. I needed to partially disassemble the signal strength meter to loosen the screw (green threadlocker) to free the stuck needle. A very scary place to work. 😱

The Beolit 700 is finally done. Not the best sounding radio I’ve done (case induced speaker compromise?) but it had some interesting challenges with three blown transistors and a broken handle as well as the usual culprits.

I picked up a "non-working" Tandberg TP41 this week on eBay for the price of a few coffees. Sometimes you get really lucky! It'll get the usual electronic refresh in due course and I think the teak cabinet will come up a treat with some Danish Oil even if it is a Norwegian radio!

Brilliant Mixed Doubles curling bronze medal match between Italy and GB and a well deserved win by Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner. The home team fans were impeccable. A delight to watch and enjoy. 👏👏👏🥇

A new tool in the arsenal arrived today, a six month old R&S spectrum analyser. My vintage R&S RF signal generator sits underneath. Will it make my radio restorations any better? Not often but I’ll have more fun. 😈

Trump writes 'Shockingly, our "brilliant" NATO Ally, the United Kingdom, is currently planning to give away the Island of Diego Garcia, the site of a vital U.S. Military Base, to Mauritius, and to do so FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER' when his administration previously welcomed the deal. Mentally ill?

And still before I was born by a few years I read that in the summer of '49 the Radio Constructor magazine's circulation was still being restricted by paper rationing. Maybe we've forgotten the devastating consequences of armed conflict? Today, of course, our first loss would be the Internet.

A side-note in tthe November '48 issue of Radio Constructor magazine was one of the first reports here in the UK of a newfangled device called a transistor. Embarrassingly it was written only a handful of years before I was born. 😱 Little did they know how things would change... 🦖
