When you're an athlete, climate impacts can hit hard. But for many, awareness also catalyses action! I asked two pro soccer/football players to give me their first-hand accounts in Talking Climate this week ⬇️

Recent news reports warn a powerful weather pattern known as El Niño could be on the way. Some scientists say it could intensify into a “Super El Niño.” But what does that actually mean? And why should it matter to you? 👉 oceana.ly/4v3ef94

New work from Oceana on all those industries that enable distant water fishing. Who finances the vessels? Registers & insures them? Provides their crew & comms? Are they useful levers to better control DWF practices? #fisheries #highseas 🦑🌏🌊🧪🎣🪸🐟 oceana.org/reports/behi...

Whoa 🤯 The Moon, in full eclipse, with the #Artemis II Orion spacecraft. Part of the Moon and spacecraft are lit by Earthshine, and both Saturn and Mars are visible to the lower right. Incredible. Details: images.nasa.gov/details/art0...
[alt text by NASA] The Moon, seen here backlit by the Sun during a solar eclipse on April 6, 2026, is photographed by one of the cameras on the Orion spacecraft’s solar array wings. Orion is visible in the foreground on the left. Earth is reflecting sunlight at the left edge of the Moon, which is slightly brighter than the rest of the disk. The bright spot visible just below the Moon’s bottom right edge is Saturn. Beyond that, the bright spot at the right edge of the image is Mars. Credit: NASA

My REU in 2019 was the very first time I told myself “me? a scientist? I can do it.” It introduced me to my research interests, to knowing how to approach graduate school and what NOAA even was. Without it I would not be where I am today. This is devastating.

My REU in 2011 helped me understand I had a path in research. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of mentoring several REU’s, many of whom have gone onto grad school or scientific careers. The gutting of these programs will have a devastating impact for many years. www.science.org/content/arti...

One of the people fired from NOAA today is the director of the Ocean Acidification Program. That program also leads the U.S. government's effort on marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). The destruction of American science is incomprehensible.

I finally made it over! same old me -- going to be posting about fish, science, advocacy and life during grad school and the things that make me more than a scientist; my 🇲🇽 culture, fútbol, and movies (SAG still on strike!) Fellow latino/e/x scientists - I hope we can find each other here too!
I am standing on the railing of a moving boat off the coast of Miami, the water is very blue/blue green, i am holding onto the railing and i am smiling to the left. I am wearing greens shorts, grey shoes, and a blue longsleeve as well as a blue baseball cap on. My hair is in pigtail braids and i am wearing sunglasses. It is a partly cloudy sky
