The end result of this is not that you don't get to use your choice of bathroom - it's that you don't get to use the bathroom at all. Suddenly, you have to plan every trip with this in mind. Where are the toilets you know are safe? How long can you go without needing to use one?

You don't have to think about this if you aren't impacted by it, but it becomes way easier to just not go out in public. And so we don't. People sometimes comment that trans folks have a huge online presence - do you think that this is because we have thriving offline social lives?

We are a tiny section of the population and in so many ways we are currently being *driven out of public life*. Bathroom bans are not the only way, but they are the one which announces to cis people that it is acceptable to harass and assault us in public in the most visible fashion.

Back in my politics degree, I forget which class, we were given a thought experiment to show how systems let people abdicate responsibility for their actions. Guy gets behind on his mortgage. Bank sends someone to evict him. He walks out with a shotgun and says 'try to throw me out and I'll shoot'.
