The "40 hours" baseline was based on 5 days a week and the catchy "8 hour work, 8 hours sleep, 8 hours for living lives" slogan and was supposed to be a temporary compromise with the idea that workers would fight for more of those life hours. NEVER COMPROMISE WITH CAPITALISTS.
