On May 18 I will defend my PhD at Tilburg Uni @tilt-tilburgu.bsky.social My thesis is about why the business model of surveillance advertising remains largely unshaken, despite the ECHR and EU rights to #privacy and #dataprotection. Live stream will be open from 13:30 lnkd.in/enZiQ6wN

Simply to say the words “I stand with Palestine Action” is now an offence. If I were to say those words, I could be sent to jail. So could you, writes Ronan Bennett. www.prospectmagazine...

She calls the fines on Apple and Meta "enforcement" but we all know that those fines were basically giving a parking ticket to a full-size tanker truck full of heroin. Will that stop trafficking?

NEW: It looks like Palantir is helping Trump build a mega-database of Americans' private information so he can target and spy on his enemies, or anyone. @aoc.bsky.social and I are demanding answers directly from Palantir.

Did Meta deploy Russian technology and tactics to monitor and track activities of billions? Especially in current circumstances it would be very concerning. This must be investigated and explained in full transparency. It’s 2025.

Thought I’d take a break from the internet by looking at art. Now can’t unsee the parallels to current political and techno solutionist hubris.

This from @rachelgriffin.bsky.social looks great on DSA “systemic risks.” I 💯 agree that this framing depoliticizes (or just hides) distributive/ideological conflicts. I take from that a fear of govt. Who will call the shots at the Commission? She fears platform capture. Porque no los dos, I guess…

For a long time, the “bargain” companies claimed to offer was some surveillance in return for “relevant ads,” ostensibly free platforms, & algorithmic suggestions. The next “bargain” is all-consuming surveillance in return for a system they claim will know you, interpret your world & direct you.

This @politico.eu article about whether Microsoft suspended ICC chief prosecutor Karim Khan's email account or not, or whether they might do that to European official, is somewhat confusing word salad. Let's disentangle it a bit. www.politico.eu/article/micr...

Online surveillance is justified by a narrative that it helps to ‘optimise’ ie rationalise advertising. Aside from the law & ethics of that, it can’t even be possible if the metrics are made up by platforms, as also discussed in Subprime Attention Crisis by @timhwang.bsky.social

Reminders: "Concentration camps" aren't the same as "extermination camps." Both were/are horrific. Most Nazi camps were *outside Germany*, away from the eyes of German citizens. Those trains? Were to, uh, deport the category of people whose lives were deemed unimportant. Never again is now.

Quote from our published article by authorNikolaus von Bernuth: “The DSA’s regulatory framework rests on a central premise: a baseline level of trust in the good faith of its addressees. Considering the rapid politicisation and reorientation of major very large online platforms (VLOPs), this premise is seriously challenged.”
