A trio of medieval buildings with gables to the street stand among later brick buildings. A small number of visitors look in shop windows or stand to look at the buildings. There are puddles from earlier rain in the narrow roadway.

For #RockinTuesday a view of the cairn from a walk up Knocknarea in 2023. Although I have pictures taken closer, I chose this one as the walkers ahead on the path give a sense of just how big it is. 🪨 #TombTuesday #IrishHistory #Archaeology #Ireland #Neolithic #Landscape #Sligo #ECK #EastCoastKin
Landscape-oriented, 3:2 image.

A wide, flat hilltop. There is a path on the right hand side that traces a course through the low-growing vegetation to a massive stone cairn on the horizon. If you zoom in, a group of walkers are approaching the cairn on the path.

Their tiny figures provide a sense of scale, revealing how impressive the Stone Age cairn is - its diameter is around 55 metres (180 feet) and it stands around 10 metres tall (33 feet).

It is a bright, cold January morning. The scene is sunlit and the sky is pale blue and clear aside from a few wisps of high, white cloud.

Queen Maeve's cairn on top of Knocknarea, seen from Yellow Strand on the opposite side of Sligo Bay last weekend. #TidesOutTuesday #TombTuesday #PassageTomb #IrishHistory #Prehistory #Archaeology #Ireland #Neolithic #Landscape #LandscapePhotography #ECK #EastCoastKin
Landscape oriented, 16:9 image.

A sandy beach in the foreground, still wet from the retreating tide. There is a strip of land at the end of the beach with a bungalow on it to the right hand side and several telegraph or electricity posts.

Behind this a large hill stands on the horizon. It looks like it is looming over the aforementioned strip of land but it is in fact several kilometres away on the far side of an ocean bay.

The hill's steep slopes are forested on the left, while its right hand side is comprised of precipitous limestone cliffs. Towards the left hand side of its broad, flat summit a large neolithic cairn is silhouetted against the sky.

The sky itself is pale blue with scattered light clouds.

Sharing an oldie today, showing the kind of work I made 15 years ago (this cartoon is from 2011). It was a period in my career when I would try to disguise the fact that I was lousy at drawing humans by drawing animals instead. #economy #inequality #capitalism
Cartoon of an anthropomorphic pig wearing a black business suit with a red bow tie, holding an uneven weighing scale. The beam is labeled "CAPITALISM." The higher pan contains a heavy weight marked "99%" while the opposite pan hangs low while it holds a tiny weight, visually representing wealth disparity.

#ThickTrunkTuesday
The lower trunk of a 300 year old Cedar of London. It’s at the edge of a lawn, that’s not yet recovered from summer, in a walled garden. A straight gravel path passes to the right of the tree, with a shrub border between path and high stone wall. Its corner is beyond the tree, with a wide gateway to the left giving a glimpse of trees and grazing sheep, the sky has a brief patch of blue with clouds varying from white to mid-grey.
The tree trunk seems too narrow at the base, widening as it rises to thick branches but it is several metres in circumference.

Close-up of two circular, weathered depressions in the surface of a gritstone boulder on the moors above Todmorden, England.

Rainwater has collected in them and there's also a central dark patch at the bottom of each depression, either collected dirt or staining. The combined effect is reminiscent of the iris and pupil of a human eye.

A farm track above a valley leads from the centre of the foreground into the distance where it curves gently around a hillside on the right. The hillside is covered in ferns.

A dry stone wall runs parallel with the track on the left hand side.

An undulating line of hills runs across the background. The valley below is only partially visible in the distance but it is made up of farmland and patches of woodland.

🧵The iconic limestone pavements of Yorkshire, famously found around Malham Cove and Ingleborough, are spectacular post-glacial landscapes. Formed and exposed by the last Ice Age, these flat expanses of Carboniferous limestone feature blocks known as ‘clints’, separated by deep fissures
Twisleton Scar’s hawthorn trees are among the most photographed and recognisable natural landmarks in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Rather than being a single tree with a documented historical story or human-planted heritage, these hardy hawthorns are celebrated for their resilience, distinctive appearance and close connection to the ancient landscape. Their story is inseparable from the rugged limestone pavements of Twisleton Scar. Growing from thin soils between the limestone, the trees have endured centuries of harsh weather, strong winds and exposed conditions. Their twisted forms and weather-beaten branches are a reminder of nature’s ability to survive in challenging environments, making them an iconic symbol of the Yorkshire Dales. Autumn Has Landed for #Stunday and #OrangeSun by #ColorADay Happy Sunday everyone! #EastCoastKin #ECK #photography #seedhead #gardening #autumn #macro #macrophotography #sunlight (iPhone camera)
Photograph taken five minutes ago in the garden of the seedhead of an iris. I feel it sums up autumn and I'm really rather chuffed with this whilst trying to ignore that my jamas bottoms are now soggy from crouching down in morning dew-covered grass. No judgement that I'm not dressed yet - it's Sunday, a day of rest...and photography!

Image is portrait in dimension with a dark grey background, thanks to my ever trusty shoebox lid. A three-headed iris seedhead fills the frame in colours of olive green, cream, tan, chestnut, dark brown and a glimpses of a wonderful burnt orange. The front most seedpod is the largest and contains a minimum of ten seeds (number goes up each time I count). Each seed looks slightly like it's been gently crushed between thumb and forefinger. They nestle within what looks like two-fingered, chunky, wide-open, cream-coloured pea pod, at right angles to each other. The two other seedheads of the trio sit behind and aren't so open, and are out of focus. Morning sunlight catches areas of the pods and seeds.

Message to self - don't be grumpy that you haven't got anything new to post for Stunday, get off your backside, into the garden and actually look. Got SO many photos within five minutes...and morning dew is a photography gift.

The best commute in London?
If you need to get to Westminster from the north, my advice is to get off the London Underground at Green Park and walk.

An October hiking memory... ☀️ 🌳 🥾 Photo: Goyt Valley, 2 October 2019 #ForestFriday #Trees #Nature #OnThisDay #Memories #Throwback #Hiking #PeakDistrict #LandscapePhotography #WoodlandWednesday #ECK #EastCoastKin
Portrait-oriented, 4:3 photo.

A woodland scene. A tree on a steep hillside, which slopes upwards from the bottom right corner towards the left of the frame.

The tree is in tge centre of the frame and has a gnarly trunk, which curves out towards the right and then back to the left before growing upwards in a wavy fashion.

Almost all of the tree's side branches are growing towards the left hand side of the frame, giving it an air of striking a flamboyant pose.

The background is mostly foliage from other trees, the sun shining brightly through their leaves from behind. The central tree is dark against this illuminated backdrop.

There is a patch of cloudless, bright blue sky visible in the top left of the picture.

Today's Bird of the Day theme is "Best Beaks" I'm going with this Whimbrel in Arrecife in January 2020. #BirdOfTheDay #BestBeaks #WaderWednesday #BirdsOfBluesky #Nature #Wildlife #WildlifePhotography #ECK #EastCoastKin
Portrait-oriented, 3:2 image.

A brown and buff patterned wader on a sandy shoreline. It has distinct dark bands on the crown of its head, separated by a pronounced, central light stripe. Light bands can be made out on the sides of its head too.

The bird is facing the camera with the water's edge behind it. Its head is pointed down and its long, dark beak is probing for food at the base of a rock on the left. Because it is leaning downwards there is a clear view of the plumage along its back which is very slightly tilted towards the viewer.
