These paragraphs from @winterjessica.bsky.social are very chef's kiss www.newyorker.com/culture/prog...
In 2024, H.H.S. approved incremental, across-the-board wage increases that were intended to bring all Head Start teachers’ earnings in line with those of their counterparts at local public schools. In the hope of paying these educators a princely average of about fifty thousand a year while maintaining enrollment numbers, Biden asked Congress, in 2023, to give Head Start an additional $1.1 billion—about what aviation experts have estimated it would cost to refurbish Trump’s Qatari private jet. But Congress agreed to just two hundred and seventy-five million dollars—less than the estimated taxpayer bill for Trump’s ballroom. (In May, A.C.F. proposed rescinding the Biden-era wage increases.)In its sixty-one years of existence, in fact, Head Start has never been funded at a level commensurate with the number of low-income children in the United States. A Government Accountability Office report found that, in 2020, Head Start served only about half of the preschoolers and ten per cent of the infants and toddlers who would have been eligible for a spot. Head Start’s budget for the most recent complete fiscal year remained more or less flat, at about $12.3 billion. That is several billion short of what the U.S. spent on the first twelve days of the war in Iran, a conflict that roughly sixty per cent of Americans oppose, and it is less than half of what is allocated in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act toward hiring, training, transportation, I.T., and bonus pay for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, an agency that about half of Americans want to abolish. By contrast, recent polling shows that eighty-seven per cent of Americans support Head Start, including eighty-four per cent of Republicans and ninety-four per cent of Democrats.

Over and over again, the Trump administration is making the child care crisis worse. And when Congressional Republicans had the chance to stop him, they voted NO.

Along with 200+ other groups, we're demanding Congress reject this dangerous bill that would hurt providers and families and further destabilize the child care system. childcareforeveryfamily.org/press-releas...

Child care is notoriously unaffordable. But parents also know that even if they can afford a program: sometimes it’s not possible to find one. Is your community a child care desert?
Graphic with a pink background and puzzle pieces. Text states that 46% of young children in the U.S. live in a "licensed child care desert," where there are often 3 or more children competing for every 1 available spot with a licensed care provider.

Beyond it being exciting to see an important policy being made real in NYC, the other groundbreaking thing about Mamdani loudly and doggedly supporting universal childcare is that it's not coming from a woman or even a parent. It's being championed by a childless man.

Making my BlueSky debut to say..... #ChildCareforAll It's LONG past time we "take care of daycare" and fix our broken child care system. Any politician that says we can't is failing families, plain and simple.
