Dr Amy Hall @amyvhall.bsky.social · 22/06/2026Being able to design hydration capability rather than discover it by trial and error is an important step forward for crystal engineering. Congratulations to PhD student Henry Holleb on this wonderful achievement!! 000
Dr Amy Hall @amyvhall.bsky.social · 22/06/2026By linking computed electrostatic potential descriptors with hydrate formation, we establish a framework that enables the rational design of molecular salts with targeted hydration behaviour. 100
Dr Amy Hall @amyvhall.bsky.social · 22/06/2026For many years, molecular salts have been known to hydrate more readily than cocrystals, but the underlying reasons have remained unclear. In this work, we show that the nature of the counterion is critical: charge localisation emerges as a key driver of hydration propensity. 100

Dr Amy Hall @amyvhall.bsky.social · 27/01/2026We also managed to isolate Form II with the use of a mimetic supramolecular gelator. The electron diffraction structure of the gelator reveals a similar herringbone structure to Form II, which allows the temptation and growth of Form II and the inhibition of Form I. 110
Dr Amy Hall @amyvhall.bsky.social · 27/01/2026These discrepancies highlight and emphasise the tension between real crystals with defects, disorder, and twinning and idealised calculations, especially for polymorphs that lie within a small energy range. 110
Dr Amy Hall @amyvhall.bsky.social · 27/01/2026Form I is stable for years at a time, while Form II disappears in solution within a day. We calculated the lattice energies of the polymorphs and generated the CSP landscape. All data suggested Form II was the most stable polymorph - the opposite of what we observe experimentally. 100
Dr Amy Hall @amyvhall.bsky.social · 27/01/2026This work stemmed from my wonderful MChem’s preliminary results. She discovered the concomitant growth of two polymorphs (Form I and II) of a simple acylhydrazide. Further crystallisation studies of Form I revealed an accordion crystal morphology not seen before in organic systems. 100
