Forever love that "open for business" on 10/8/1846 meant "our guy is standing outside the gates with a big map so you can point at the plot you want"

Elmwood opened for business 180 years ago today. Happy anniversary to one of my all-time favorite places.
Portion of an 1896 map of Elmwood Cemeter shows winding roads, irregularly shaped burial sections marked with letters and numbers, and topography along a river valleyClip from the Detroit Free Press, October 6, 1846: We are requested to give notice that Elmwood Cemetery is now open for the selection of lots by subscribers and the bublic (sic). On Thursday next at 2 o'clock P.M., one of the Trustees will be at the cemetery with a plan of the grounds, to give any information that may be desired, Previous to that time the plan may be seen at the office of Henry Ledyard, Secretary of the Board of Trustees. On Friday next, at 2 P.M., lots will be offered for sale at the Cemetery, and those who have subscribed $100 will be entitled to the first choice at a minimum price fixed by the trustees. In case the same lots shall be selected by two or more subscribers of $100, it will be disposed of to the highest bidder among the subscribers. The subscribers of $50 will then make their selection, and afterwards those of $25; subject to the same regulations. No subscriber allowed the privilege of a choice without he has previously paid his subscription in full. After subscribers have selected their lots, non-subscribers may make their selections, subject to the same regulations. Should the weather prove unfavorable on either of the days above mentioned, the sale will be postponed to the first fine day.Two girls in white dresses and sun hats sit on a stone bridge over a winding creekway in a wooded grove. A third figure in a dark dress, maybe a guardian or caretaker, is walking away from themModern photo of the same stone bridge over a creekway in a grove of trees. Bridge is now sagging with age and blackened by time. A blonde kid in a light blue t-shirt leans over the railing.

For the first time in my long dentist-going life my hygienist suggested I wear headphones during my cleaning and it changed the whole damn game. Also look at this cute radio they gave me.
A white hand with iridescent blue-green nail polish holds a black handheld radio from RadioShack with white corded headphones plugged in. Digital display shows the dial turned to 101.9 WDET FM baby

A big marble plinth type monument with an urn on top. Name on the base reads “Aspinall.” It’s night time and the monument is uplit. Other monuments and trees in the background are illuminated and a colorful pathway extends into the distance

The Mighty Sparrow, Trinidadian Titan of Calypso, Is Dead at 91
He was sometimes described as the last of the true calypso singers. But in fact he simultaneously preserved calypso tradition and invented it anew.

Actually a pretty good (and very pretty) late summer day for cemetery wildlife watching: squirrel napping, hawk eating, cats slinking (not pictured)
Red-tailed hawk stands on the ground in front of a monument to John P. Cook, 1825-1898. You can’t see in the photo but the hawk has caught a squirrelBlack squirrel is taking a nap on the branch of a yew tree. In the background is the wall of a hillside mausoleum
