Was the guy I saw at one with a picket sign comparing Brexit to the triangle trade really not a good look? Yes. Did anyone notice? Not sure

I’m never sure if how cringey FBPE was actually made a difference, like ai know several self proclaimed communists who went on those marches, despite the agro centrism and “st Albans must be heard” signs

The Well is just… very very clearly an episode that halfway through writing someone went “oh shit this is too much like midnight”, so they had to make it a sequel to midnight

*he* killed the tsar and the Kennedys, first person. While the blitzkreig raged, he “rode a tank”. Wdym his tank was generous, he’s satan, why is he worrying about career progression

The most interesting bit of Sympathy for the Devil is the implication that Satan himself, who personally orchestrated the crucifixion and the Russian Revolution, was like, a mid level Panzer officer in Nazi Germany

…why is it in English?

I don’t want to get our hands dirty but Budanov always insisted he was authorised to assassinate Putin and whether that’s true or not, we may want to quietly give HUR a hand and let it be known if they’re holding back on our account they don’t need to

Look if the team that’s gonna be docked 100 points at Christmas wants to beat our title rivals in the meantime I’m not gonna get too upset

Actually I think the worst place for being a cartoon stereotype of itself might be rural Bavaria but I’m not sure it’s intentional…

Doesn’t mean it’s not the right thing to do

I think reacting to an attempt to kill senior government officials on our soil is under reacting!

So I was thinking about this… is there an argument for continuing to dramatically underreact? Like if the idea is to deter us from arming Ukraine via the threat of hybrid attacks… so far, ain’t working!

They’re really good at some targets (the fact that London and Washington pretty much had a real time running commentary on Putin’s thinking in the run up to the Ukraine invasion is extraordinary and would have scared me out of attacking at all). Others… not so much

Is home team advantage not considered as big of a thing in the US? Asking bc whenever European football suggests games abroad whichever team is suggested to lose a home game bc it’s gonna be in New York or something kicks * the fuck* off

At this point I’m pretty sure the western country where Zelenskyy has the lowest approval rating (except Poland) is Ukraine

Tbf we partly did it because it’s really really hard to fork over loads of money to uni administrators who made their deal with the devil (Nick Clegg) and got themselves in this mess even if we should

It’s like if father of the house was an extremely influential office which technically put you 3rd in line to Downing Street

You’re never more powerful than at the end of your career because everything is so seniority based. Chuck Grasskey is the closest equivalent to the speaker of the senate *because* he’s the longest serving Republican
150
Amrk @amrk.bsky.social · 21h
You also tend to be elected to federal office later in life, Chuck Grassley is 16 years older than Jeremy Corbyn but he’s actually only been in the senate 2 years Ionger then Corbyn’s been an MP. Not to mention that he needs to decide if he’s running for a six year term 2 years before the election

Amrk @amrk.bsky.social · 21h
Partly incumbent advantage is incredibly strong so their parties want them not to, partly huge staff budgets (30-40 staff each) means you can work a lot less hard, partly seniority based structures (committees are much more powerful and the chair is assigned by the longest serving)

When Francis addressed the US Congress and did the whole “I am of course pro life [waits for Republicans to stand up and clap].., of course to be pro life you must also oppose the death penalty [they all hurriedly sit down]” troll, that was actually quite a radical break!
0171
Amrk @amrk.bsky.social · 23h
Mild subtweet but ppl are like “what do you expect, he’s the pope” but the church being this against the death penalty is basically a Francis thing. It was only made formal policy in 2018 and John Paul II specifically was for it in limited circumstances. The Vatican had capital punishment till 1969

Amrk @amrk.bsky.social · 23h
Only formally since 2018! It’s a Francis thing, JPII specifically accepted it in “extreme circumstances”!

The HP show is also making this mistake, Dudley is about to physically beat up Harry at school in the trailer, which to modern kids marks him not so much as a spoiled brat but as the worst person you’ve ever met and a future family annihilator

In 2026 it just doesn’t work. Apart from anything else a very high percentage of western 16 year old girls in the 2020s are very ardent feminists which just fundamentally changes how her classmates would react

Carrie is many ways a very intensely *old* book from, the idea of violence at an American high school being treated as inherently shocking to the teen group showers to the bullying which is now basically stamped out to her hair being “without colour”. (What does that *mean*? Is it transparent?)

Obviously it’s not the be all and end all, didn’t save Vince in 2015 (nearly did though) but if Polanski had say Ed Davey’s approval ratings he’d be a huge plus over the council leader

I still… basically don’t believe them. Source: I have had as my MP both Vince Cable, otherwise occupied my entire lifetime and Munira Wilson, by all accounts an intensely dedicated local member. Guess which one people always said did amazing things for the community? People want an MP on TV

Uber has all sorts of problems with its corporate culture but it’s kind of funny in hindsight that the bad apple of Silicon Valley as seen in 2016 is the company that absolutely provides a very useful service in the real world. Like taxis *are* much better now

It’s a semi live issue worldwide, it’s not particularly partisan, doesn’t really split the libs and cons internally

I assume it’s to some degree it’s a social cause Francis and Leo can enthusiastically embrace while we all know they’re a little uncomfortable with the position on gay rights (if not necessarily abortion)?

Australia manages to have consistently competitive state politics in safe states for one party federally without resorting to Canadian Fuckery. No other federal polity does this and idk how

I remember hearing that despite all the downsides of the different parties Doug Ford’s 2019 unpopularity was still widely acknowledged to have damaged the federal Tories and being like guys. Why are you doing this to yourselves.

And in fact several major estsblished provincial parties are called the Liberal party who by no means agree with the actual liberal party on things and you’d think *they’d* want to to change the name

The greatest moment is tv history is the ITV commentator on Cape Verde-Spain’s “the greatest moment in Cape Verde’s history [realises he doesn’t know if they once overthrew a dictator or defeated Hitler or something]… er as far as football is concerned”
