Meet one of the South’s most important landlords: the Gopher Tortoise. These humble reptiles dig deep burrows that support over 350 other species — from frogs to snakes to insects. But as longleaf pine habitat disappears, so does the tortoise… and everything that depends on it.

No locality posting this week, as I will be traveling. Here's a Mishana Poison Frog (Ranitomeya amazonica) from NE Peru. They are small as frogs go, and this adult comfortably on my thumbnail :) #herps #frogs #NaturePhotography
A side view of a brilliantly colored poison frog, perched on a small branch and facing left. The body of the frog is jet black, with two bright red stripes that run from the head to the rear end. The side is also jet black, with a stripe starting at the front leg that divides like a tuning fork - the upper stripe starts out as a light metallic blue, changing to a yellowish orange; the lower stripe remains light metallic blue. The arms, legs, fingers, and toes of the frog are a light metallic blue, broken up by a series of irregular oval spots of jet black of different sizes. The jet black eye is hidden in the jet black side stripe.

Seems like there’s a theme this week, another gorgeous diamondback found on a rather successful survey. This gorgeous individual seemed unbothered by our presence and was left alone after some brief photos. #herps

Imma make this Pitcher Plant day - Flask Pitchers (Nepenthes ampullaria) from SW Borneo. Other pitcher plants are carnivores, eating the remains of insects trapped inside, but N. ampullaria is a detritivore - its open top collects falling leaf litter & other organics. 🌿🌱#NaturePhotography 1/2 🧵
Four pitcher plants in the image, three more or less pointing upwards, one pointing to the right. The 'pitchers' are basically tubes that are bag-shaped, and their openings are roughly triangular. A leaflike structure is attached to one corner of the triangle, pointing downward. Two of the pitchers are light green, with rusty red spots and streaks, and the other two are orangeish-red in color, with darker spots and streaks. The insides of the pitchers appear to be the same color as the outside.

Ornate chorus frogs (Pseudacris ornata) are some of the prettiest anurans in the southeastern United States. They come in gray, green, and reddish- brown color phases and gather to breed during the winter months.

A juvenile Toad-head Turtle (Mesoclemmys nasuta) from NE Peru back in January. These are pleurodires, or side-neck turtles - their head tucks to either side under the shell. A different group from cryptodires, which pull their head and neck straight back under the shell. #herps #NaturePhotography 🌿
A side few of a small turtle, the head turned to face the camera. The upper shell is very flat and rough, and the rim of the shell is a very dark brown, while the scutes in the center are a light shade of brown. A small part of the lower shell is visible, and it is brownish-yellow. Three of the legs and feet are visible, and they are a dark gray color, and there is webbing between the toes. The head is large and wide, and a dark grayish-brown on top, with a brownish-yellow color along the jawline and along the chin and lower neck. The eyes are large and match the head color's grayish-brown, and the nostrils are close together and upturned.

An adult Yellow-spotted Night Lizard (Lepidophyma flavimaculatum) from NW Costa Rica. Interesting lizards in many ways - for one thing they are live-bearers rather than egg-layers, and some populations are female-only (parthenogenic), including those in Costa Rica. #herps #NaturePhotography 🌿
A large, heavy-bodied lizard with strong limbs, viewed from the side, left to right. The tail curls around to face the right. The lizard's ground color is dark brown, with lighter brownish-yellow spots and bars along the head, body, and tail. The head is large with powerful jaws, and there is a ridge of rough scales running down the back and along the tail. Some belly scales can be seen between the front and back legs; they are yellowish-brown and ringed in very dark brown.
