Thanks for 400 followers y’all! I’m very excited to share more this year, and make a lot of cool new content! I just accepted a new Environmental Scientist position after a couple year hiatus of bartending and applying to loads of things. Networking I did all the way back in 2021 led to an offer! 🧪

The incredibly vulnerable Golden-winged Warbler occasionally graces me with its presence in the Midwest doing my spring birding. This year was one of those years, and got some amazing looks at him! Some estimates say 98% declines in their Appalachian populations. #birding #warbler #wildlife

Signs of spring, ranked.
A six-panel comic called Signs of Spring, Ranked. In panel 1, #10 is Robin - not always a useful sign since robins are quietly present in winter in many areas. In panel 2, there's #9: Daffodil - nice, mundane, #8: Skunk Cabbage - unusual, cool, and #7: Dutchman's Breeches - lol. In panel 3, there's #6: Turkey vulture migrating - gloriously ominous, a humbling reminder of life's transience, and #5: very very small bunny - wow, the little ears. In panel 4 there's #4: Snake sunbathing, with a gartersnake warming itself - underappreciated, looks cozy, and #3: Woodcock going peent - the perfect sound. In panel 5 there's #2: small frogs yelling as loud as they can, with a wood frog floating in a pool inflating itself to make a loud quack - they crave love, or at least they crave the external fertilization of 1500 gelatinous eggs. In panel 6, there's #1, Even smaller frogs yelling, with a spring peeper sitting on the ground making loud calls - yes, YES.

This spring, cicada Brood XIV will emerge in the eastern US! This is the second-largest periodical cicada emergence on the planet (after Brood XIX, which emerged last year). Expect to see them in parts of the following states from May to June in 2025: KY, TN, IN, OH, WV, GA, NC, MD, PA, NY, MA.
A map of North America with the Brood XIV cicada emergence highlighted in blue. The brood more-or-less follows the Appalachian Mountains of the eastern United States. An illustrated plate from my book "The Cicadas of North America". The plate shows a periodical cicada species called Magicicada septendecim, which is expected to be the most abundant cicada in the United States this year. The cicada is mostly black with orange patterns on its belly and wings. It sports a pair of bright red eyes. The M/F labels below the illustration stand for "melanic" and "ferruginous", or "blacker" and "redder" color forms. The common name of this species is "Northern Pharaoh Periodical Cicada", because its song sounds like "phaaaaaaa-raoh"
