Why did the Fleadh feel busier than Glastonbury? Because it was!
Infographic titled "Fleadh vs Glastonbury" comparing event areas drawn to scale. A small orange square shows the Belfast Fleadh pedestrianised zone, about 150 acres. A much larger blue square shows the Glastonbury Festival site at Worthy Farm, 1,500 acres, with two nested squares inside it: the fenced festival area of about 900 acres, and the festival ground minus camping fields, estimated at 500 acres. Below, two statistics: Belfast Fleadh recorded 289,560 city-centre footfall on Saturday 8 August 2026, its busiest day of a 1.6 million week, while Glastonbury's licensed capacity is about 210,000 on site at once. Text notes that roughly 1,900 people per acre passed through Belfast's streets, against about 420 per acre if all of Glastonbury stood on its non-camping ground — still more than three times the size of Belfast's zone. Produced by Anne Marie Cunningham, using Claude.

New essay: Why hospitals always get bailed out. A Hungarian economist already knew. A French sociologist explains why. And it turns out they were both reading the same German. amcunningham72.substack.com/p/why-hospit...
The image shows the Substack article preview card for "Why hospitals always get bailed out" with the subtitle "What a Hungarian economist and a French sociologist can tell us about NHS funding" by Anne Marie Cunningham, dated March 28, 2026. The header image is an interior photograph of a hospital corridor — tall glass walls, directional signs pointing to SDEC, outpatients, escalators, a surgical ambulatory unit, and an outpatient pharmacy. Screenshot of a ChatGPT Plus subscription cancellation page. The page confirms the subscription will end on March 15, 2026. It lists benefits that will be lost: access to GPT-5 with advanced reasoning, more messaging and uploads, extra image creation, and access to agent mode. A dropdown menu shows "Other" selected as the cancellation reason, with a text field below containing the user's typed reason: "doing questionable deals with US gov." Buttons at the bottom offer "Keep subscription" and "Cancel subscription."

And for anyone interested in the techy aspects of this... Here's a post on how I did it last weekend without writing a line of code on my phone #speirgorm open.substack.com/pub/amcunnin...
Screenshot of a terminal-style deployment log (timestamps, ‘Downloading cache…’, ‘Uploading build…’, ‘Build successful’, then ‘Failed to start: Error: getaddrinfo ENOTFOUND …supabase.co’). Overlaid in large white text: ‘I built a full stack web app in a weekend. I’m a GP, not a developer. And it’s not about health, before you worry too much.’ ‘AMCUNNINGHAM72.SUBSTACK.COM’ appears at the bottom.

It's not true to say that the RUC did not have ANY legitimacy in the eyes of Catholic/Nationalist communities-much more nuanced than that. Attached is from the Patten report. The research noted that in poorer communities there were similar levels of dissatisfaction. cain.ulster.ac.uk/issues/polic...

Richard Branson speaks about teaching Metformin for longevity in the Sunday Times. New to me. There is mention in this article of the challenges of getting funding for an RCT to investigate this since as Metformin is off patent there is unlikely to be related profit. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/a...
Relevant section : Another secret to his good health comes in pill form: a prescription drug called metformin that works by lowering blood sugar levels.

It is mainly used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes but preliminary studies suggest it may slow ageing and increase life expectancy by acting on blood sugar, and through antioxidant effects and better blood vessel health. "If there's one pill worth asking your doctor about, I would say it's metformin," Branson says.

#ukgc25 #walkcamp We went for a lovely walk in St James's park. It was good for mind and body. Fantastic day at GovCamp where I agree with @hadleybeeman.bsky.social that there was cautious optimism :-) Now to see if we can get GovCampNI going!

20 years ago I was working on my MPH dissertation on smoking and social capital. One of the best descriptions of what people often enjoy about smoking is how it changes their 'situation'. See quote on a phenomenological perspective. I think this is very close to what you are describing.
