My last long run before the Great South Run, 13km through some of the Portsmouth’s loveliest scenery. Followed up with a vanilla latte and pastries sat on Southsea seafront near the war memorial, absolute bliss. How was your Sunday?

I have not held a golf club in over 37 years, so it was with some trepidation that I attended the latest Portsmouth City Council networking session at the Par Society in Hilsea. I mean, I wasn't great, but if you watch the video, my third effort was as close as I've ever come to a hole-in-one!

September is done! So here's a slightly different question. What's one good thing that happened to you this month? It doesn't have to be anything massive. What's your September highlight? ❤️ Let's finish the month on a positive note.

⏰ TIME MACHINE QUESTION You can spend one day anywhere in history. You can watch, listen and experience everything — but you can't change anything. Where are you going? 🏛️ Ancient Rome 🏰 Medieval England 🎸 A famous concert 🌙 The Moon landing ⚔️ A famous battle Or somewhere completely different?

🤔 I need to know where people stand on this. What food combination do you LOVE that other people think is absolutely disgusting? Pineapple on pizza? Crisps in sandwiches? Chips dipped in milkshake? Peanut butter and something weird? Marmite and cheese? What's your guilty food combination? 👇

The people who actually avoid the call-out in the first place are the ones who deal with it in September, while it's still routine maintenance rather than a reaction to something frightening. Same job, same cost, completely different reasons. You've got a few weeks left to be one of them.

Every October, National Home Security Month brings a predictable spike in people getting their locks, alarms and cameras sorted — usually because something's just gone wrong, or a neighbour's had a scare. Sensible timing, wrong order. 1/2

Together, they cover the two questions that matter most: will someone be put off trying, and if they don't get put off, will you know about it and have proof. Fifteen minutes now saves a much worse conversation in December. #Autumn #HomeSecurity #CCTV #HomeAlarm #GardenOffice

For most home-run businesses around the Solent, that means two things working together — an alarm that deters and alerts, and a camera that actually sees clearly once the sun's gone. Neither one fully covers for the other. 2/3

From today, dark starts to properly outweigh daylight until next spring. It's a good natural marker for a quick seasonal check: does your garden office setup still make sense for six months of long, dark evenings rather than short, light ones? 1/3

28 years. That, my friends, is a very long time. 28 (and a bit) years ago was the last time I woke up in my house without at least one of my children also being there. Yesterday, we dropped the youngest off at uni. And now it's just my wife and me at home. We need wine. Send wine. And chocolate.

I don't spend much time on this platform, so I don't have many followers. One of them is @pauls-h.bsky.social the founder of the phenomenon that is parkrun. I have just read a piece on the BBC about his backstory. Paul, my admiration for you just increased ten-fold.

In 40 years I've had a lot of conversations like that. The common thread isn't dramatic break-ins; it's ordinary people who did one sensible thing before it mattered, rather than after. 3/5

The alarm we'd fitted six months earlier went off, the person left empty-handed, and she genuinely believed — rightly or wrongly — that without it, her business laptop and three years of client files would have gone with them. 2/5

Decent low-light performance and proper infrared range aren't add-ons, they're the difference between footage that helps and footage that's just noise. 3/4

It's worth checking now, before the clocks change and it's dark by teatime: does your system actually give you a clear, usable picture at night, or a grainy shape you can't identify? 2/4

By mid-September, the light's noticeably going by early evening. If your camera was set up in June, it's now trying to cope with a completely different amount of light for a good chunk of the day — and standard daytime footage quality doesn't always translate after dark. 1/4

💷 You've just won £1 million. There's only one catch… You have to spend it all within 24 hours. You can't give it away. You can't invest it. You can't buy crypto. And you can't simply buy £1m worth of something and sell it later. What's the first thing you're buying?

What's your POV?

Scott Andrews | Amberley Security @amberleysecure.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
On the rare occasion someone does try their luck, a loud, immediate alarm cuts the amount of time they're willing to stay to seconds rather than minutes — which is usually the difference between a scare and a genuine loss. Protect the box, and you protect what pays the bills.

Scott Andrews | Amberley Security @amberleysecure.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
An alarm earns its keep here in two ways. Most of the time, the sight of a keypad and a sounder box is enough to send someone looking for an easier target elsewhere.

A garden office rarely gets broken into for its own sake. It's what's sat on the desk that's the draw: laptops, monitors, cameras, tools, sometimes stock. For a lot of home-run businesses, that's not just expensive to replace — it's the actual means of earning a living, gone overnight.

Here's one for the nostalgia department… What's something from your childhood that has completely disappeared? For me, it's getting Look In magazine every week. No internet. No smartphones. No streaming. Somehow we survived. 😂 What's yours?

It's one of those details that's easy to miss until you actually need the policy to pay out. A 3 star Europrofile cylinder isn't just good practice — for a growing number of home-run businesses around the Solent, it's the line between a claim that's honoured and one that isn't.

Autumn is when a lot of business insurance policies come up for renewal. Buried in the small print of many is a specific requirement: outbuildings & detached workspaces must be fitted with a British Standard or 3 star rated cylinder lock, or any claim relating to break-in can be reduced or refused.

It's THAT day of the year. They say that the 3rd Monday in January is the saddest day, but I disagree. For me it's today. The 1st of September. We have nothing but dreary autumn and winter evenings to look forward to. Still, I've cheered myself up by entering a couple of races, so it's not all bad.
