By mid-September, the light's noticeably going by early evening. If your camera was set up in June, it's now trying to cope with a completely different amount of light for a good chunk of the day — and standard daytime footage quality doesn't always translate after dark. 1/4

A garden office rarely gets broken into for its own sake. It's what's sat on the desk that's the draw: laptops, monitors, cameras, tools, sometimes stock. For a lot of home-run businesses, that's not just expensive to replace — it's the actual means of earning a living, gone overnight.

Autumn is when a lot of business insurance policies come up for renewal. Buried in the small print of many is a specific requirement: outbuildings & detached workspaces must be fitted with a British Standard or 3 star rated cylinder lock, or any claim relating to break-in can be reduced or refused.

We have nothing but dreary autumn and winter evenings to look forward to. Still, I've cheered myself up by entering a couple of races, so it's not all bad.

Hey facilities managers! If you've got 5 minutes today (OK, so maybe you don't, but go with me anyway), just practice downloading a clip from your CCTV. When you have an issue and need to send footage to the police, you'll be able to do it without stress.

Honestly people, if your CCTV isn't capturing what you need, the chances are that your coverage is wrong -- adding another camera in the right place might solve the problem, but it costs money. Just move one of the other cameras into a better position.
