However we did have a few horror stories come out of regular student housing, esp first year. Locals did not qualify for 1st year student housing but out-of-towners did. There was one year w/ regular breakins into female student housing :/

Greek socs were much whiter than campus on average and most people I knew considered them too expensive to join. (Cheapest by far was $100+/yr; for that money you could be joining Ski & Snowboard and use of their lodge in Whistler!)

They have their own frat houses in what I would consider "on campus" (closer than most private housing). I was at UBC late 2000s and knew two frat execs, but ime ~95% of students were not members. The biggest student orgs, other than the student soc, were the Chinese-Canadian party clubs.

The SAR team that did this rescue have a great docuseries called North Shore Rescue. Great primer on exactly how difficult these mountains are. They’ve had to rescue v experienced climbers off similar routes!

I think the local SAR groups in BC are against it as they’re worried people won’t call for rescue. Even popular hikes here marked as “easy” on AllTrails would be moderate anywhere else.

My friend and I who both live in houses were bemoaning the lack of walkable options in our neighbourhoods. I would like the population to support a few more cafes and indie grocers actually! Esp since my nbhd already has a decent number of walk-ups.
