Pushed through and rewrote all of chapter 7 of SB today—4600 words. But the real news is that I'm finally done with this section of the book that's given me so much trouble. I'm free! (Until my critique group reads it and tells me what's wrong with it lol) #writerlife #writingcommunity #writesky

It has been a while since I've drawn Astrel in her bird form [ #art #oc #ocsky ]
An art of Astrel in her bird form. She has black and red feathers, with two long tail feathers. She is swooping down. She has gold bands on both her ankles and gold jewellery on her head. The background is a simple mix of dark browns and gold. The banner is a gradient red and black with simple patterns that shows gold materials.

I've reached one of those sticky spots in my novel that I've never known quite what to do with. Gotta get my characters from one place to another in a way that feels realistic but doesn't take up too much page space (this book is long enough already). I can do this! #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

Along with all the other problems surrounding AI's infiltration into writing and publishing--including the difficulty of detection and the lack of disclosure--I think we're in for a period of AI panic where writers will increasingly be baselessly accused (see? I just used em dashes)

LLMs impress the writers who do not want to write, the coders who don't want to code, the researchers who don't want to research, and the lawyers that don't want to actually understand case law. Those that desperately tell you how powerful Al is and that you simply must use it are looking for you to validate their own laziness or distaste for effort, and those who are impressed with LLMs' outputs tend to be people with low standards.

“Use AI to brainstorm but not to write.” “Use AI to help you outline but not to write.” These are commonly proposed as “ethical” ways for undergrad students to use AI, but I’m sorry, brainstorming & outlining are just as integral to writing as the actual construction of sentences.

Sad to hear of John Flanagan's passing. I'm deeply fond of the Ranger's Apprentice series, which really scratched that itch for sneaky, hooded archers. The books have humor and heart and are just a lot of fun to read, and I so adore the characters. Thanks for the memories, Mr. Flanagan ❤️

#Febchantment day 27 I'm excited to create stories in a world where everyone has magic of some kind. It's not limited to certain people, you don't have to go to school to learn it, and there are no tools required to use it. Everyone just has it innately. It's a fun system to play around with.

#Febchantment day 26 I'll define strength as a user's proficiency and familiarity with their magic. Strongest: Solan, a player with unnatural magic who can create illusions. Weakest: Probably most of Keria's Tribe friends, since they don't use their magic (or at least claim not to).

#Febchantment day 25 At the time of Sacred Bell, all anyone knows for sure is that their grandparents were born into a world without magic, and now magic is everywhere. No one knows where it came from or why, though many theories are beginning to emerge.

Amaris @amarisfarr.bsky.social · 24/02/2026
#Febchantment day 24 In the time during which my novel is set, there are no schools or formal ways of learning magic, so Keria learns how to use her magic the same way everyone else does: through practice. Whether she wants to or not.

Amaris @amarisfarr.bsky.social · 23/02/2026
#Febchantment day 23 Everyone in Sacred Bell can use magic. How much it affects them depends on what exactly they can do, but for most the impact is pretty small. For Keria, however, her magic completely changes her life, and a lot of bad ways, but some good as well.

Amaris @amarisfarr.bsky.social · 22/02/2026
#Febchantment day 22 In Sacred Bell, the story would not happen if it weren't for magic, as it's Keria's discovery of her magic and her attempts to learn and understand it that shape the plot and her character. But the resolution of the story relies on her own growth rather than on her magic.

#Febchantment day 20 This is surprisingly hard for me to give an interesting answer to because most magic in Fife *is* mundane, so everyday life is affected by magic in some way. Many people can replace some small tasks with a magical equivalent, but traditional skills haven't been lost.

#WIPSnips subtle I *may* have added the word "subtle" to this snippet for this prompt BUT that's because the prompt made me realize that I absolutely should use "subtle" somewhere in this wip 😅
One evening, Grandfather Casper gathers us around a bush. At first all I see are its delicate, twining branches mottled in shades of brown, but then he draws our attention to a tiny bud at the end of one of those branches. I draw in a breath.

"Mark this color," Grandfather Casper intones, "for it is the most pervasive of them all. It is called 'green,' and you will see it often and in many shades. It may seem harmless and subtle now, but when it covers all the earth you may become disoriented and easily lost."

#Febchantment day 19 Because everyone has magic, every aspect of culture has been touched in some way. One specific affect is that, except in specific circumstances, bodies are typically burned instead of buried in order to prevent them being raised from the dead against their will.

#Febchantment day 18 Feeling like a broken record now lol, but it ✨depends✨ The benefits of many magics are obvious; for instance water-based magic can be invaluable in the desert. But even those who can't benefit from their own magic directly can find a way to make money from it.

Amaris @amarisfarr.bsky.social · 17/02/2026
#Febchantment day 17 This depends on location and what era of magic we're in. Very few magics well ever be outright outlawed, and never permanently, but throughout history some may be frowned upon, restricted, or banned in certain parts of Fife depending on the culture and perspective at the time.

#WIPSnips hurt
"Do you need anything else?" The mother's name was Anaya. "We've some medicine, some bandages if you're hurt. A change of clothes, perhaps? You're about Tulli's size."

Keria shook her head. For some reason, now that her stomach was full she felt guilty, like she was tricking these people somehow. She'd only told them a little bit of a lie, and they hadn't questioned her. Even so, because she could never be truly honest with them, their sincerity made her feel all the worse.

Amaris @amarisfarr.bsky.social · 16/02/2026
#Febchantment day 16 Arguably (since they aren't human and don't have magic as defined in the rest of Fife), the gods of the Sea Kingdom have the most powerful use of magic. They can influence any number of mereen (mermaids) at any given time, and some are powerful enough to influence other gods.

#WIPSnips never
The powder is a revelation and a relief to the other youngs. It tells them that we will not be helpless, that there will be answers and cures for the trials brought on by Spring.

But I am not so comforted. Spring has not even properly arrived, yet it turns our world and even the very air—something I have never given a second thought to before—against us. If this is only the beginning, what other, greater threats await us?

#Febchantment day 15 Natural magic works within the bounds of nature and draws power from nature itself. Unnatural magic works outside the bounds of nature and draws power from the users themselves. But some magics defy such definitions and can't be neatly classified one way or the other.

#WIPSnips serious Going to Sacred Bell for this one.
Kal finally tightened the last strap on his overstuffed knapsack. He looked at Keria again, his face very serious. "It's up to you to take care of your mother while I'm gone."

"By myself? What about Herro?"

Kal's face hardened. "Herro's given up. We can't trust him now. But you and I haven't given up, have we?" He waited until Keria shook her head. "Good. You take care of your mother, Keria, and I'll be back soon."

#Febchantment day 13 Magic most often goes wrong when someone doesn't know what they can do in the first place. Especially in Fife's early history, most people discover their magic by accident, and depending on what your magic is, the consequences can range from mildly bad to catastrophic.
060
Amaris @amarisfarr.bsky.social · 12/02/2026
#Febchantment day 12 Mastery is highly subjective, since even two people with similar magic may have different levels of power or different ways to express that power. Mastery, then, is about knowing what your magic can do and your ability to use it without unintended consequences.

#Febchantment day 11 The biggest limitation is that most magic is mundane. Most people can only do one or two very small things, like light a candle with conjured fire or levitate an object the size of their hand. It's rare to have great power, and such magics come with unique consequences.
