the crazy thing about making time for any creative pursuit is that you literally have to do what you have a gut-deep yearning to do or else you'll see other people doing it, and it WILL make you insane.

more operation mincemeat character designs. will redraw/clean these up and add more expressions as i continue to explore the characters and refine the proportions and style. i'm mostly happy with jean, i like hester but need to make sure i can draw her consistently, and i need to explore bevan more.

Sketches exploring a design for Jean, with a full body drawing and various expressions inspired by various character moments from the musical.

Sketches exploring a design for Hester, with a full body drawing and two expressions. One references the line "Bill has two 'L's." The other references the exchange "That is a lot of complicated stamps" / "Isn't it just?"

Sketches exploring a design for Bevan, with a full body drawing and two expressions. One is a face exploration with notes about differentiating him from Monty. The other features the line "You've made a stupid mistake."

to me montagu in operation mincemeat the musical is trapped in the infamous musical theatre narrator time loop purgatory where he is doomed to keep telling the story over and over but he is loving it.

rip annie dillard

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

horrible butch and pathetic twink make an oc to impress their boss. and also it's wwii. (designing characters from the musical "operation mincemeat" in some kind of cartoon style)

Drawings of Charles and Monty in a cartoonish style, featuring the "Charles, please stop dry heaving!" and the scene where Monty tells Charles "Sorry about the 'father' thing. Bit weird," before saying to him, not 15 minutes later, "Father's never been more proud!"

Sketches of various Monty expressions and the line "He's gonna have to bend over and sit on--Johnnyyyyyyyyy!"

not based on any cast in particular, just the general Vibes shared between the different castings, plus a little bit of reference to the real people the characters are based on, plus ofc my own design instincts.

charles is the character who i have the clearest idea of re: designing operation mincemeat characters. however he is also the hardest to get onto the page the way i want in terms of like, posing and proportions. i'm working on it. i gotta get the lead two down so i can see how their designs interact

actually the real reason it's bewitched me is because it has a shocking amount of thematic depth that it's trying to express. every listen i uncover new layers and ideas and connections between them. it's really good. also it's silly funny which is the most important thing.

my friend showed me a musical and it made me draw roseginger again #hathm

Ginger asks, looking befuddled and concerned, "THAT'S the moral?" Rosemary spreads her arms cheerfully and declares "YES IT IS!"!

Ginger, dubious, asks "So as long as you're in charge, you can do whatever you like forever?" Rosemary lets out a satisfied "Ahhhhhh!"

A hill I'll die on: Illustrations in novels should come back. Adults like pictures, too! A few older books I have contain wonderful woodcuts or inked drawings. I think they enhance the experience. Not necessary, but classy.

photo of a stack of 5 books: lucha of the night forest, pantomime, sheine lende, the butterfly assassin, and the works of vermin, all with redesigned covers.
