Agree! When I first heard about this I thought “That is such a stupid rule” but then I realized that no, I wouldn’t bring a drink to an interview — I’ve just never articulated that as a rule

The federal minimum wage has been stuck at a paltry $7.25 an hour since 2009. Guess how much the wage would be today if it kept up with worker productivity over the years?

Once you realize that competent professionals have lengthy discussions and group input about how best to accomplish something in a certain field, it leads to trust in experts in fields you don’t know anything about, because you assume that they’ve thought more about those issues than non-experts

Great interview. In 1995 I was certainly enmeshed in the “problematize” flavor of academic feminism she identifies here, though I never liked it much and was never very good at it. And yes: Revolution from Within was a big book then and brought Steinem back into focus in a big way.

Death certificates all have multiple lines for causes! Health is complex! Them: “This person had diabetes so they didn’t die of COVID.” Me: “This person was alive with diabetes until they got COVID.”

In the late 90's people started using WYSIWYG editors like Dreamweaver to make websites, instead of by hand, and the html produced was famously complete dogshit. There were weird <br> tags everywhere, it'd look normal but be a huge pain in the ass to modify or figure out what fucked up, etc

The New Federal Funding Problem
Universities like UNC-Chapel Hill major cuts to research funding, but the pipeline for new grants is shrinking. Researchers have been left in limbo.

Another thing I do sometimes while running is to recite poetry and/or song lyrics silently in my head: works well both for things I already know by heart and things I’m trying to learn by heart, though with the latter if I mess up I have to check my phone for the correction

Tennessee governor says he backs airport name change to honor Dolly Parton
Bill Lee says he favors proposal to rename Nashville’s international airport after legendary country singer Bill Lee, the Tennessee governor, on Friday said he favored a proposal to rename Nashville’s international airport after legendary country singer Dolly Parton, who died three days earlier at age 80. In a statement, Lee said he and the managers of the airport in Tennessee’s capital city – where Parton resided – wanted to create “a lasting tribute to her indelible legacy and the generations of people she inspired”. He said he had spoken previously to the 11-time Grammy winner and her team, who were “touched by the idea”. Continue reading...

I’m sure you’re right. I did notice an Asian sex worker who is paired with a white player in the party scene though

Agree - I don’t know how that matches up with what the demographics would’ve been at the time but surely even then in Texas there would’ve been more Black players, and more Black sex workers, and more Black dancers to portray them

If I ever rewatch the movie I’m sure I’ll pick a favorite Aggie. And wow they did a great job of getting male dancers who look completely plausible to me as college football players (although there are no huge defensive dudes)

I have another thing to say about BLWIT which is that I felt rather dubious about all the partial nudity and sexy lingerie until it got to the fabulous locker room scene, at which point I was like, “Okay, equal time for male partial nudity and objectification, THANK you, I’m in”

I’ve read a lot of the Brontës (my PhD is in 19th-c British lit, first novels then poetry) and I think they’re overrated. Well-written for popular fiction, yes, but give me Hardy or Eliot any day.
