There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...

But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

Something that astounds me is the level of accusation related to being disabled. Disabled people are accused of faking their disabilities. Disabled people are accused of not filling out paperwork properly. Disabled people are accused of being a problem when the real problem is ableism.

In my voting precinct, there's a specific set of seated voting booths for ADA needs. So a person can go to that booth and get the help they need from one of the volunteers. And to use those booths, all you do is say that you're waiting for one to the person directing traffic.

An unexpected treat came in the mail today! (I intentionally forgot I preordered it.) Now I get to make a cuppa and dive into some serotonin and daydream. *happy sigh* If you don't already know of @blackforager.bsky.social and you love plants (and food!) I suggest you go look. Bone Apple Teeth!

A large picture in the center of the cover shows Alexis outside, carrying a harvesting basket and perhaps laughing or singing. Certainly, she looks happy! She's wearing one of her many cute outfits; this one appears to be a long lightweight skirt with a small checkered print in pale pastel colors with a similarly colored short sleeve blouse, which has a visually creative asymmetrical button placket down the front, as well as embroidery on it.

Truly, the author looks comfortable, cute, and confident. I'm very excited to read what's inside the cover!

One of Spouse's friends nearly died from an ectopic pregnancy rupture. She knew it was imminent, took herself to the ER, begged for help, & when they left her on a gurney in the hall because they "couldn't verify her preg was ectopic" made sure she called lawyers til the blood hemorrhage started.

I've seen that facial expression in hospices. Guess that means I was wrong yesterday when I guessed it was a paid body double. *shrug* It's definitely elder abuse, though I'll admit I don't feel terribly bad for MMcC. My sense of ethics tells me that I'm looking at some kismet.
