My message to Amnesty (@amnestyuk.bsky.social) on why I've just cancelled my longstanding direct debit. 🏳️‍⚧️ #TransRightsAreHumanRights 🏳️‍⚧️

With regret, I've decided to cancel my direct debit of over 15 years. This is due to your actions over the 'A growing threat' briefing, and your apparent abandonment of trans rights at a time when they're under constant attack and roll-back in this country.

I'm particularly disappointed that you've also withdrawn the 'Like A Snowball' report which, to my knowledge, hadn't attracted legal controversy. Furthermore, the willingness of your chief executive to meet with Sex Matters - an organisation at the forefront of anti-trans action as (correctly) identified by the briefing - sends a clear message that Amnesty have been cowed by the very groups they should be opposing.

The only conclusions I can draw are that:

- Trans rights are not seen by Amnesty as enough of a priority to be worth fighting legal cases on their behalf; and/or
- You've been reckless with your campaigning on trans rights, to the point that you can't defend your stance legally, handing an enormous & unnecessary victory to anti-rights campaigners.

In either case, I now feel that my financial support will be better directed to organisations who've demonstrated a more solid commitment to fighting for trans rights, in court and in the wider public sphere.

Remarkable how this paragraph refuses to join the dots between a ban on puberty blockers and avoidable surgeries / medical interventions. Yet another case of GCs trying to scare people off transition by citing the hostile circumstances they've themselves created.

Hilary Cass, the British paediatrician whose review of NHS gender care led to a significant shift including a ban on puberty blockers, warned of “unrealistic images and expectations on social media” when it came to “what transition would really mean and how hard it would be”, including “quite intensive medical treatments” and “sometimes quite brutal surgeries”.

Worth noting the BBC’s own style guide entry for 'gender/sex' (from www.bbc.co.uk/newsstylegui...). Hard to see an editorial justification for their recent wording, other than ‘our editors are transphobes’.

Transgender, or trans, is an umbrella term for a person whose gender identity differs from their sex recorded at birth. A person born male who lives as a female, would typically be described as a “transgender woman” and would take the pronoun “she”. And vice versa. We generally use the term and pronoun preferred by the person in question, unless there are editorial reasons not to do so.
