That was the real thing keeping Niot awake in the night; the constant mulling over a method of making Wolfstanus be stained so thoroughly with sin that the remains of the French army in Paris would be compelled into a siege upon the fort in Bordeaux. Such a task was not simple in the slightest. It would need to be perfectly timed, perfectly framed, and perfectly affective for what he needed it to accomplish.

The planned hunt upon the week's end so shortly after their arrival granted Niot a horrid idea on what Prince Philip may have planned in tandem.

It would be everything but the method he was seeking. It would not be honorable. Nor would it in any way aligned with principle.

After all, the best way for the English to rile up the French now would be an attempt on King John's life or his son's while already surrendered. A hunt was the perfect stage.

Something even accidental would be more than enough for the foulest of nobility to set aside their distaste for the Dauphin to join him in battle. The remainder of the French army would be pushed back into the conflict whether they wanted to be or not. To not pledge their banner to save their royal line would make them no more than a traitor to their own country, even if many desired a different ruler in order to push their own influence. It would ruin reputation of any noble lord who would not in a far more permanent manner than their cowardice at Poitiers.

Yet, as Sir Jacques de Bourbon and the good archbishop had mentioned, the death of royalty between the two kingdoms would draw out war for another century, or until both nations were in ruin. It would need to fail. But failure without blood drawn wouldn't be enough to force France's hand. To work as the king's circle desired, it needed to be pressed just far enough for scandal, but not ruin. One that Paris would no doubt hear of.

Prince Philip would not have such a careful hand to guarantee that it would not come to more than that, however.

Much to Niot's bitter chagrin, the Black Prince rode into Bordeaux with his army with fanfare. He was received kindly by the town.

Peasants bowed and parted on the roads for them. Some watched the army ride in with interest while others simply resumed the typical tasks of their everyday life with nothing more than perhaps an interested eye occasionally turned towards the invaders upon what was once French lands. To several of them, it didn't matter whether their taxes went to the English or the French. Royals were royals.

The local nobility were worse. They tipped their heads and hats from upon horseback, one or two saddling up to exchange a welcome word and invitation for the evening to the commanders and Black Prince himself. Schmoozing harpies pecking in hopes of receiving favor. One even did so to Wolfstanus while ignoring Niot plastered to the man's back upon the horse since he was denied his own.

Not one person spat on the English like Niot had hoped.

And why would they? Once the fortress upon the riverside came into view, all the English nobles were already discussing throwing their gold and silver on feasts and celebrations over conquering the good King John of France.

Local nobles riding alongside them encouraged them and spoke of local flare that they should have at such celebrations. Not a one spoke with the same distaste that Niot felt. Too busy in thinking of what portion of that gold and silver could be dumped into their local coffers.

Vultures. Vultures, all of them.

"I had the opportunity to have the most interesting discussion with his Highness this morning after I took my leave of your side of the camp."

The voice of Sir Bernard launched into his topic of choice just as he got his own reddish haired horse to trot in line with the pale palfrey before Niot could even acknowledge him. The mention of King John had Niot's attention immediately, however. He turned to glance at the famed French knight, making it apparent that his attention was caught.

"He spoke of the Dauphin quite highly. And how his firstborn son would be in Paris soon with the Duke of Orléans." Sir Bernard continued, face forward so that should anyone see them riding together, they would not assume they were speaking to one another. Niot moved to do the same. "I asked him, if we had a rider whom was lightning fast upon a horse, if we could possibly manage to convince them to charge this horrid procession in the name of freeing the king. He said it was possible… But so many of us are injured. Such a valiant and brave effort would be difficult for most of us."

It was only then that Sir Bernard turned to Niot. His expression was bright eyed and hopeful, as if he just had a solution to all their problems cross his mind in a flash of inspiration.

Niot knew that it hadn't. Otherwise, Sir Bernard wouldn't have made a point to ride up next to him. And yet…

"I wonder… How are you upon horseback, Sir Vendôme?"
