The tragic paradox of democracy is that it has to be continuously promoted and maintained - even to the degree of restricting dissent - by the state, lest the people take it for granted and we fall quickly back into tyranny.

There is a very large section of humanity who prefer not to think about complex things, just get on with their lives and seek/create little interference otherwise. For this, they think they are good people. Make them insecure though and they turn to the most basic animalism then claim it as truth.

When someone actually manages to take out Trump, they should say it's "Trump derangement syndrome" that made them do it, so we can all justify leniency.

I just told a Reform supporter who asked me to explain why they're fascist "It's both foolish and pointless to try and explain the physics of flight to a pigeon. Why would I try to explain fascism to a supporter?" I'll be honest I'm struggling with it Have I lowered myself lower to the same level?

Possibly the single most powerful lesson I learned when young was don't listen to what people say; watch what they do. As bullshit detection rules go, it's been incredibly consistent.

It amazes me most how many people suddenly seem to believe that without immigration we'd eliminate crime, poverty, partner and child abuse and paedophilia. Or even fucking reduce it measurably. Their naivety is equalled only by their ignorance and casual racism.

Meaning is an application, not a definition, but it is very much an application based upon consistent experiences and observations of other objects. Not a single ounce of that has any necessary connection to objective truth or "the things as they are in themselves". Nor does it need to.

The problem with the standard SM algorithm is that it's quality neutral. Engagement is engagement is engagement. It's the commercialisation of identity to undermine oppositional power. It's Che Guevara on T-shirts in high street franchise clothing stores, and it's very deliberate bullshit.

It's not so much WW3 as a WW2 spinoff where there are a couple of new characters and everyone's else has just changed side.

The fact that we might have limited or even no potential access to the full objective truth of any external things does not inherently belie the information we gain from them. It impresses upon us that there are many things we cannot know about other bodies - including each other - and so are...

I know it's a complete nightmare fantasy that could never happen and if it did no-one could ever see it coming, ever, but... What if Trump straight out attempted to glass another nation, ostensibly over resources one evening...

The greatest axiom I think I hold for personal survival, if not sanity, in this current world is "Don't just listen to what people say, watch mostly what they DO."

It strikes me that if MSM had responded to the fast and reactive information spread of the internet by maintaining a relatively slower output of measured, verifiable articles, they wouldn't find influencers the same level of competition.

They actually came for the scientists, academics and industry experts first; but as so few of them were us, we let it happen. But they were our shield.

In observing my own behaviours, while I've previously told myself I do social media because I'm drinking, the general insanity of recent years started me wondering recently if it might not be the other way around 🤣

Sadly, hard work and loyalty within a modern company no longer guarantees success or advancement; they merely set the expected output levels you can be exploited for at the minimum cost.

The destruction of traditional British culture and values is very much the project and fault of America; not the multiple Islamic nations we continuously blow the shit out of for ideology and profit.

The anger, panic and rejection of the observable relativity of morality seems to me to have far more to do with the variability of our own cultural assumptions of righteousness than it does whether or not there's a measurably better way of achieving a positive outcome in any particular circumstance.

Surely if there was ever a better time, opportunity or cause to seriously revisit international coordination in separating renewable energy prices from fossil prices on the international market, it's now?

Surely the greatest lesson we can learn from the horrors of soviet era communism is NOT to attempt to maintain a failing economic ideology through militaristic totalitarianism and zealous nationalism.

It's a great demonstration of how poorly we've moralised our economics when the Justice Sec of a party once representing progressive social values indicates that reducing the consistency of fair outcomes to reduce costs is not only a positive exchange, but must be morally good because it's cheaper.

Well to give him some credit, Trump certainly seems to have unified East against West in a way not t even religion alone ever has. That's an achievement, I suppose.

P.s. Thinking "if I can't relate to it, it must be bad" is a decision on judgement that projects insecurity, not righteousness.

I wonder if we perhaps made a mistake allowing industrialists to think they're inherently socially valuable, illustrate intellectual and/or moral values or are natural leaders. No... scratch that...we went one worse. We allowed ourselves to believe it.

Althalus Tyde @althalustyde.bsky.social · 05/03/2026
Humans had a quite successful existence before industrialisation. Humans also existed before slavery. One might be forgiven for thinking a person can have a good life without putting themselves into the entire service of another. But how dare you pretend it's freedom.

Ideology makes fools of us entirely because we like to believe ourselves as a static. We become static only when we allow our ideology to drive our identity.

The only thing I believe is really stopping us from moving decisively away from nihilism is an unwillingness to recognise terrible personal accountability toward morality that it represents.

Althalus Tyde @althalustyde.bsky.social · 26/02/2026
It's not complicated. If you run a country as a business, you risk reducing human value to that of a wealth creation resource. If you do so with a neoliberal/death-stage capitalist mindset, you reduce them to a resource only for other individuals to gain wealth. And you piss on liberal democracy.

Even in my inherent cynicism and weirdness it still throws me the depths of nonsensical justification and violence towards others so many people (and societies) seem to want to go through to slake their own egos.

Ideology is an intellectual prison when we hold it as an identity. Identity is a prison when we hold it as a static.

"Lol! How can liberals be fascist? You melt!" Simple; when we allow individual power to grow to the point where it undermines democratic freedoms. When "personal freedom" becomes code for false hierarchies of othering, abuse and oppression It's easier than you think; that's WHY we have to fight it

The same people convincing everyone that if someone is darker skinned but male they must be an invading soldier when seeking refuge are the same people who want to convince 12 year old girls that they're betraying the nation if they don't have babies.

A genuine sense of freedom coupled with a weight of accountability comes with recognising people judge others only to justify themselves.

If you're in any way surprised that extreme power inevitably and always seems to lead to extreme corruption and monstrous immorality, you've not been paying enough attention to history.

All sociopolitical ideologies are value based systems. So the question isn't "What does it take to change a system when it's shown to no longer function effectively?", but "What does it take to update and unify around a new system of values when the old ones are shown to no longer work effectively?"

I'd never vote for a party who said "We're the greatest county in the world." I recognise it as populist dishonesty. I want a pragmatic govt that deals with the causes of our problems, including the need to evolve our attitudes for the betterment of all. Only the insecure need false validation.

The saddest thing about the lie that to be in power you must be intelligent and morally superior isn't just the observable nonsense of the statement, but the bemusing fact that those in power also deeply believe it.

If you live in the US, things like Trump and ICE are the reason you have a second amendment. It's not so redneck incels can stroke their shotguns and get angry at anyone different rather than having a normal life; it's so citizens have a genuine recourse against the rise of tyranny over democracy.

What we are, who we are, is by necessity contiguous throughout humanity. It's inescapable. We experience a range of mostly similar things through a range of similar perspectives and can provide a similar range of response and feel a similar range of feelings. Everything else is narrative.

In the advent of the internet, and particularly social media, all nationalistic, cultural and politically ideological curtains (certainties of "normality") were rendered mute. We're not suffering an identity war. We can suddenly communicate person to person worldwide; It's an identity crisis...

Antisemitism being so horrifically weaponised by Israel will wrongly & sadly remove a huge amount of power behind the lessons we should have learned against authoritarianism & how easy it is to slide into hatred. Poppies be fucked; We've entirely forgotten what we were supposed to remember.

Postmodernism and especially post-post-modernism may have fitting sounding arguments within common misunderstandings of science, or sadly sometimes even within them, but I'll countenance reality being imagined as true when one of them can demonstrate kneecapping themselves with an imaginary brick.
