Trump has picked a side in the Russia Ukraine war. News organizations should make that clear. And every single Republican running for office should be forced to answer whether they, too, support Russia, and how much of Ukraine Russia should be allowed to rule.

The best way to support Ukraine is not just to post about it online with pithy hashtags, but to donate to or volunteer for charities and funding drives, buy Ukrainian exports, experience and fund Ukrainian culture, and vote for pro-Ukrainian politicians. Reposting ‘NAFO’ memes isn’t good enough.

Same goes for Louis II de Lorraine, Juan de Lanuza, or any number of others killed without any process at all by European monarchs of the same period.

You will notice lots of formal steps, involving many people. Of which there were none in the case of Monaldeschi.

Sure, it began with both houses of Parliament passing the Act for Ensuring the Queen’s Safety (1584/5). You can read about it here: www.historyofparliamentonline.org/periods/tudo... (Where, as you will see yet again, ascribing the desire to kill to Elizabeth is mistakenly personalist.)

Also what, the point I made was specifically about hostility to James I. So whatever suspicions existed about the later Stuarts’ sympathies to Catholicism didn’t factor in at all to the apprehensions about his accession. Because they didn’t exist in 1604!

Well, I think that capital punishment is inadmissible, and that the procedure used was extremely dubious. But it was at least authorised by parliament and a jury of indictment; and there was a manner of process and proof, although dodgy indeed. That is different from killing on the spot.

seems significant that he openly despised the legal system of England, and loathed its judges for repeatedly telling him that he in fact actually couldnt just do this or that thing, even though all the other european kings could

Probably had something to do with them not being worried that those rulers would abolish their indigenous legal system bc it annoyingly limited their power and had rude barbarian vibes instead of the ‘civilized and polite’ ones of Roman Jurisprudential Latinity tm

no it very much did and dismissing it as “xenophobia” is handwaving. Like i wonder why people were so hostile to james I and charles I? Hmm! the english were pretty ok with william and mary and with the hanoverians who were not even good at speaking english
200
fondly do we hope @altfaustmegaligtor.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
So no, it wasn’t mere ‘idealism’, because it was also treated as a practical reality by a king who absolutely hated England’s legal system and thought it was nuts.

And as King of England, James I gets really angry that he’s not allowed to do lots of things that he could easily do in Scotland, and that (AS HE HIMSELF SPECIFICALLY POINTED OUT MANY TIMES) all the other sovereigns of Europe could do too!
100
fondly do we hope @altfaustmegaligtor.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
James I is a great example of someone who knew very well how things actually worked in the rest of Europe, because he had previously been king of another European country.

I am not talking about pie-in-the-sky sentiments. I am saying that kings of England were legally debarred and, as a result, ACTUALLY prevented from doing what they wanted to do. All the time!

You did not engage to the least degree with what I said about summary execution. Can you explain to my why it worried people when James VI and I summarily executed someone shortly after becoming King of England? Because it would otherwise make no sense for anyone to find that unusual.
200
fondly do we hope @altfaustmegaligtor.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Throughout the reign of James I, and still more so in the disastrous reign of his son, this is the massive point of tension with Parliament. They're like, this Scottish guy simply does not get how we do things here. There are rules. There are processes. We like to follow the recipe. THE RECIPE!
100
fondly do we hope @altfaustmegaligtor.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
In fact, when James I comes down from Scotland to take up his New Job, he does a summary execution of a low-level criminal he encounters on the way. And people do not react to that by saying ‘normal stuff!’ Instead, they freak out about how the new king doesn’t understand that England has rules!
100
fondly do we hope @altfaustmegaligtor.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
For example, summary executions. Queen Christina had someone killed on the spot even after she had abdicated the Swedish throne. By the Elizabethan period, that is completely not okay in England.

When people were tortured, which was not very often, the decision was made by the Privy Council, usually without the Queen being involved. England was genuinely very different from the other kingdoms of Europe in that its sovereign could not do many heinous things that were totally okay elsewhere

One reason there were lots of treason cases under Elizabeth was the fact that many people were actively trying to kill her. Pope Sixtus V offered the king of Spain a million ducats to get rid of her!
100
fondly do we hope @altfaustmegaligtor.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Yes, which is a tiny number compared to the practice in the Continent, and many people in the legal establishment thought that the use of torture by the Privy Council and the Council in the Marches was extremely dodgy.
200
fondly do we hope @altfaustmegaligtor.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Even the way you are writing shows how little you know about this. To say Elizabeth did this or Elizabeth did that makes vanishingly little sense in the context of English justice in the Elizabethan reign, which operated almost entirely outside the scope of personalist rule.

100
fondly do we hope @altfaustmegaligtor.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
This is an absolutely terrible take. There is a wariness of allowing the law to sanction torture in England that long predates anything equivalent in Europe. Moreover the procedural protections of law in England were far more substantive than anything elsewhere, and English people knew it.
