I walked around my apartment reading this until it stuck, and I've tested it today to see if it's still there. A few words fudged (unacceptable, for this), but it's there.

For hangable items, we put up peg board. Depends on some things, like how many holes you want to drill in the wall if you're renting, if discretion is an issue, etc. But it looks good, is easily modified, and access is instant. Also no floor footprint.
