Mathematicians are definitely right that the value of finding and solving puzzles is the generation of new puzzles. And I think historically it's clear that incorrect findings eventually get sorted out. So the incentives should probably be put on the former over the latter.

A more general takeaway for other fields, especially social scientists, I think is that this should be a hint that the fields should shift norms to take "accuracy" less seriously and put WAY more emphasis on exploration and reading widely. There isn't such a thing as a political science emergency.

I'm sure they probably solved a large proportion of the problems, but if this was actually meant for quality testing the models, they basically just showed they're very good at bullshitting. Which should make any consumer more hesitant. The stunt is only credible because there is reasonable doubt.

I looked at the OpenAI math problem stuff and this seems like just a publicity stunt, nothing about training and testing their models. If people who did their PhD on those problems don't yet understand the answers, there is no way OpenAI was able to confirm they actually solved them.

New paper in @psrm.bsky.social How we measure racial bias is important, but there is no clear agreement (rather a lively methodological debate) among political scientists about the best way to do so.

a pretty common thing i've seen at yale is courses randomly have one student summarize the papers at the start of classes. incentives like this don't work?

it's not fun to talk to about this stuff with someone who has different goals in that conversation than you do

yeah i don't believe in "ideological bias." you either want to learn or you don't want to learn, and there's good reason for either. i think it's just that people who don't want to learn pretend that they do, or the converse

this sounds like the "bayesian updating" vs. "motivated reasoning" debate, which i think political scientists at least agree can't be distinguished

College campuses need to be liberated from their administrators
Higher ed is being strangled by absurd and costly rules. What message is that sending to students?

Wrote this back in May and I stand by it: Ken Martin has got to go - it is a huge problem that the DNC has no money and somehow even less trust as we head into a presidential primary in 2027-2028. open.substack.com/pub/amandali...

Why the DNC autopsy report matters
TLDR: Ken Martin should resign & we should stop settling for mediocrity

Americans have more confidence in higher education than in big tech companies, and the gap is growing rather than shrinking. The higher ed-doomsday pundits need to get on board with the real vibe shift in public trust that is happening right now.
